Lisa Salters has spent decades in the spotlight, telling other people’s stories. But in recent months, her own life, both personal and professional, has drawn the attention of the sports world. From a quiet but long-standing relationship with Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White to an emotional absence during the NBA Finals, Salters has weathered a whirlwind off-court.
Now, just weeks before the 2025-26 NFL season kicks off, she’s receiving career news that cements her status as one of ESPN’s most iconic voices.
How Will ESPN’s Contract Extension Impact Lisa Salters’ Legacy?
ESPN has extended Salters’ contract ahead of the 2025-26 NFL season, ensuring she remains the longest-tenured sideline reporter in Monday Night Football history as she enters her 14th season.
“Salters’ contract extension further cements the Emmy-winner as the longest-tenured sideline reporter in Monday Night Football history,” ESPN said in its announcement. “She’s one of the company’s most decorated and recognizable reporters, having excelled in several roles throughout her 25 years at ESPN.”
Under the new setup, all 25 NFL on ESPN games will feature two sideline reporters. Salters will team up with Laura Rutledge alongside Joe Buck and Troy Aikman for 20 of those broadcasts every week of the NFL season. This arrangement both boosts game-day coverage and gives Salters a marquee role throughout the season.

Salters joined ESPN in 2000 and has covered nearly every sport imaginable, from the NBA Finals to the Olympic Games. In 2017, she made history by working both an NBA and NFL game on the same day, Christmas Day, no less.
How Did Salters and Stephanie White’s Relationship Come Into the Spotlight?
Besides her sideline presence during NBA and NFL games, Salters has also turned heads with her relationship with the Fever’s coach, White.
Salters’ absence during Game 2 of the NBA Finals surprised fans. The Emmy-winning reporter, known for her steady presence in high-stakes broadcasts, was suddenly missing as the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder battled on the court. Her absence came alongside a rare personal revelation.
Play-by-play announcer Mike Breen explained on-air that Salters’ mother had been dealing with serious health issues, shedding light on a difficult period for the journalist.
Mike Breen: “[Lisa Salters’] mom has been dealing with some serious health issues for a while now… Although we’ve never met her mom, we owe her a debt of gratitude for giving us the gift of Lisa Salters, who is the teammate everyone in our business should strive to have.” 🎙️❤️ pic.twitter.com/7YJHlKfiwh

However, it wasn’t just Salters’ absence that basketball followers noticed. That same weekend, White, her partner since at least 2016, also stepped away from her duties as head coach of the Fever. White did not travel with the team for their June 7 matchup against the Chicago Sky, entrusting assistant coach Austin Kelly to lead the squad to a road win.
The simultaneous absence of two prominent personalities led fans to easily connect the dots that both are in a relationship, which was a surprise for many.
The couple, meanwhile, have quietly built a blended family of four boys: White’s three sons from a previous marriage and Salters’ adopted son, Samuel. They tend to keep their personal lives private. But in a rare statement following Salters’ mother’s health issues, White admitted, “Our family is working through a hard time.”
The NFL’s 106th season kicks off September 4, with the Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys in the opener. For Salters, the start of the new campaign represents not just another professional milestone but a personal triumph after a difficult summer.
Between navigating family health concerns and her long-standing partnership with White, Salters has reminded fans and colleagues alike of the resilience it takes to balance high-profile work with life’s unpredictable turns.
Now, with her contract secured and a packed NFL schedule ahead, she’s set to bring her signature professionalism and warmth back to America’s biggest sporting stage, every single week.
