An NFL game being suspended is as rare a sight as you’ll see in sports. However, the preseason matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and the Detroit Lions came to a brutal end, even with over six minutes remaining in the contest.
The reason was Morice Norris. A defensive back for the Lions, an apparent neck injury led to the youngster being carted off in an ambulance. In an immediate on-field call, the referees decided to suspend the game.
What Happened to Morice Norris?
Trying to make a tackle on running back Nathan Carter, Norris had an unfortunate collision with the speedster. As Carter’s knee collided with Norris’ head, it bent backward awkwardly. An immediately scary sight was made even worse in the aftermath.
Norris didn’t move for quite some time on the field, as the Detroit roster huddled around him. Eventually, ambulances were called in, and he was rushed off the field. As the players from both teams stood in shock and silence, the game was called off.
Dave Birkett made the update on X, stating,” The Lions-Falcons game is being suspended after Morice Norris was taken off the field by ambulance with an apparent neck injury.”

Immediately after, Tori McElhaney of the Falcons organization provided the sequence of events that went down on the field. “The head ref just came on over the loudspeaker and announced the game has been suspended with 6:19 left in the 4Q. Teams coming together for hugs and prayers at midfield. This was the right call by the league.”

Above is the video of the play in which Norris got hurt. Lions star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown also posted a message in support of his teammate on X (formerly known as Twitter).
The injury was about as brutal as it gets for a youngster trying to make a space for himself on Detroit’s roster. Last year, he was signed as an undrafted free agent. However, he was cut from the practice squad after an injury.
Trying to make his way back into the league this year, this injury might put another damper on his timeline. The latest update about the 23-year-old is finally some positive news. Speaking at the press conference, head coach Dan Campbell revealed news from the hospital.
Nolan Bianchi shared Campbell’s words on X. He wrote, “He’s breathing, he’s talking…he’s got some movement, and now, they’re running some tests.” Further, he revealed that Norris’ mother was in the hospital with him as he went through the recovery process.
A gruesome-looking injury is never easy to digest. But as Campbell continued, “It’s an eye-opener. It’s just an eye-opener. It hits a little different. It puts things in perspective.”
It might be a long road back for Norris. But the Lions locker room, Detroit fan base, and the NFL at large will surely be rooting for the young corner to make a full recovery and make it back onto the gridiron.
