Kasean Pryor was supposed to be the spark for Louisville’s resurgence in 2024-25. Instead, fans watched him go down with an ACL tear in his left knee during the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game, leaving everyone holding their breath.
One promising season seemed derailed in a matter of seconds, and the question became not if, but when he’d step back on the court. Now that the 2025 campaign is fast approaching, can Pryor help the Cardinals reclaim their momentum, or will the echoes of last season linger?
When Will Kasean Pryor Return? Pat Kelsey Shares Promising Update
Things are finally trending upward for Louisville. Head coach Pat Kelsey brought some good news to fans hungry for answers about Pryor’s path back. “Great. You know, we’re thrilled with his progress,” Kelsey said on CBS Sports College Basketball, discussing just how well his fifth-year forward’s recovery has gone.
Adding to the optimism, Kelsey pointed out Pryor’s timeline. “He’s been on schedule, if not even ahead of schedule a little bit… He’s about seven and a half months (into rehab),” Kelsey said. “Usually, it’s around nine to twelve [months] when you’re cleared to resume basketball activities.” That news is music to Louisville fans’ ears.
The Cardinals aren’t easing into anything with their 2025 slate. Louisville kicks off its season facing Kansas and Bucknell. Right after, they’ll square off against Kentucky at home, then head out for tests at Arkansas, Tennessee, and Baylor, with headline matchups against Indiana, Memphis, and Cincinnati on tap.
These aren’t tune-ups, and for a team still building its identity, having Pryor healthy could be a huge difference maker.
Pryor’s impact was clear before his injury. He joined Louisville for the 2024-25 campaign and wasted no time impressing. Pryor posted a double-double in the season opener against Morehead State with 18 points and 12 boards. Then came a 21-point showing against Bellarmine. It was no secret the Cardinals needed his skill set.
Now, with the bulk of his recovery work behind him, Pryor’s been able to sharpen his mind as much as his body. “Just like Ali and Kobe, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Kase,” Kelsey said. “He was a great teammate last year… Being able to step back and watch things and have a different perspective has allowed him to learn a lot more about basketball in general, but also our system.”
This new perspective could pay off big in the coming season. Last year, the Cardinals lost Kasean Pryor and Koren Johnson before December, and exhaustion was obvious when March rolled around.

Looking back at the NCAA Tournament defeat against Creighton, Louisville ran with a short rotation. Only Chucky Hepburn, Terrence Edwards Jr., and J’Vonne Hadley cracked double figures. Those three logged heavy minutes throughout the year, according to reports. With Pryor set to return along with improved depth, the dynamic could shift quickly.
As Kelsey summed it up, “He’s just an absolute disruptor on the defensive end. He can rim protect, he’s terrific in pick-and-roll coverage, just a dynamic college player we’re excited to have back.” After months on the sideline, watching, learning, and healing, Pryor is primed for a comeback.
There’s plenty of buzz surrounding Louisville right now. ESPN pegs the team at No. 7 in its early rankings. If Pryor can get cleared early in the campaign and avoid setbacks, the Cardinals might just pick up where they hoped to be all along.
