Is TreVeyon Henderson Playing in the Commanders-Patriots Preseason Game? Latest on the Rookie RB’s Status

Will TreVeyon Henderson suit up in the Patriots’ preseason opener vs. the Commanders? Here's the latest on the rookie RB’s status and potential impact.

The New England Patriots lacked the weapons last season to help Drake Maye develop into the quarterback they envision. However, they’ve invested heavily in changing that narrative this offseason, with former Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson emerging as one of their most notable additions.

Henderson has been turning heads during the first two weeks of training camp, leaving fans with one burning question: Will he see action in the preseason opener against the Washington Commanders?

Will TreVeyon Henderson Play Against the Washington Commanders?

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed ahead of Wednesday’s practice that healthy starters will see playing time in the preseason opener against Washington.

“I would say most everybody that’s healthy should expect to play in the game,” Vrabel said. “How long they’ll play, I don’t know. But we have to prepare to play in football games and prepare to win football games, so that’s the mentality that we’re gonna take.”

That means both Maye and Henderson should expect to take the field. The 38th overall pick has been impressive in training camp and is widely expected to eventually overtake Rhamondre Stevenson as the Patriots’ lead back.

For now, Henderson is expected to share snaps with New England’s leading rusher from the 2024-25 season. While Henderson lined up behind Stevenson during the Patriots’ joint practice with Washington, all signs point toward the former Buckeye getting meaningful playing time in the preseason opener.

What Does Henderson Bring to New England’s Offense?

Henderson was an electric playmaker for the Buckeyes throughout his collegiate career, posting two 1,000-plus rushing yard seasons. He averaged at least five yards per carry in all four seasons at Ohio State. That efficiency would’ve ranked as the second-highest average on the Patriots in 2024-25, trailing only Maye.

Henderson presents a dual threat as both a runner and a pass catcher, which should help lighten Maye’s workload. He’s also a reliable check-down option who can find open space when plays break down or receivers are covered.

The Patriots will likely need Henderson to step up alongside their new additions on the offensive side of the ball. Stefon Diggs returns to the AFC East and figures to become Maye’s primary target. Kyle Williams, out of Washington State, will be another wide receiver looking to elevate the New England offense.

The Patriots are counting on their offseason moves and the development of younger players to climb out of the NFL’s basement. After over twenty years of sustained success, New England now looks to get back on track under head coach Vrabel, with Maye leading the way at quarterback.
