Buccaneers Star Mike Evans Gets Candid About His NFL Future, Upcoming Free Agency, and Possible Retirement

One of the most prolific wide receivers of the last decade, Mike Evans reveals all about his free agency, retirement plans ahead of the 2025 season.

For more than a decade, Mike Evans has been one of the most consistently productive wide receivers in the entire NFL. Coming in as a first-round pick in 2014, his career has been the absolute poster child for consistency as he sits as the record holder for most consecutive 1,000-yard seasons overall, and to start a career, with 11.

Even though the quarterback situation for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was far from the ideal play they’ve gotten over the last half-decade, Evans was the one standout on the entire roster. Now, closer to the end than the beginning of his run, he sat down for a tell-all interview ahead of his 12th season in the NFL.

Is Retirement on the Table for Mike Evans?

A sensational career at Texas A&M saw him tally close to 2,500 yards and 17 touchdowns over two years before Tampa Bay selected him as the seventh overall pick. His value was evident immediately, as he tallied 1,051 yards and 12 touchdowns as a rookie.

From there, it’s been no looking back for the veteran pass catcher, as he’s earned six Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro selections over his career. He was also a part of the 2020 roster that won Super Bowl 55 in convincing fashion against the Kansas City Chiefs.

However, over the last few injuries, the toll of an 11-year career is starting to show on Evans. While his numbers remain elite, he’s constantly battling through injuries to remain on the field. Last year, he even had to miss three games as his 1,000-yard streak came into jeopardy.

As a result, rumors of potentially calling it quits made the rounds in the offseason. However, Evans is back for the 2025 season, at the very least. However, what the future holds was a major topic of conversation when he made an appearance on the “Up & Adams Show.”

“Right now, I’m just focused on this season.” Currently on a two-year deal worth $52 million, Evans noted that it was the final season of his current contract that he signed before the 2024 season. As a result, he didn’t have a clear vision for the future.

“I’m obviously an older player. But I feel great. So, retirement at the end of this season is not off the table. And playing for two to five more years is not off the table either.” He then redacted his statement to reduce the bandwidth to 2-3 more years.

At the same time, there have been some questions about his future with the organization. In 2024, the Bucs were apprehensive about offering the veteran a new deal. As a result, there has been speculation about Evans potentially finishing his career on a different roster.

However, Evans had a firm answer on that end. “I’m a Buc for life.” That answer is certainly going to appease the fanbase in Tampa Bay. For the team, the consistency from Evans, combined with the resurgence of Baker Mayfield, has been a key reason for back-to-back postseason berths.

A stronger performance from the defense this year, combined with an already stellar offense, could be the pathway for the Buccaneers to go back to the Big Game.
