It is not often a longtime rival shows up wearing enemy colors, but that is exactly what happened at the Kansas City Chiefs’ training camp on Wednesday. On a field where competition usually runs high, the presence of a familiar face in unexpected gear had everyone talking. With these two teams set to renew their clash in October, fans are left wondering what might come from this curious visit.
Why Was Former Raiders Head Coach Antonio Pierce at Chiefs Camp?
The Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders have been bitter rivals for years. Although these clashes have been mostly one-sided over the last decade, with the Chiefs posting a 15-5 record against the Raiders since 2015, tension always lingers when these teams are mentioned in the same breath.
The Raiders recently changed direction, bringing in Pete Carroll as head coach and shaking up the coaching staff and roster. Meanwhile, over in Chiefs territory, another coaching twist surfaced: a former Raiders head coach was spotted at their Wednesday training camp, and he was unmistakably in Chiefs gear.
That visitor was Antonio Pierce. Pierce, who previously led the Raiders, was seen walking to the practice fields with Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Dressed in a Chiefs shirt and shorts with the team’s logo, his appearance raised eyebrows and questions about the reason for his visit.
It is not clear what exactly brought Pierce to Kansas City. Currently, he is the chief strategy advisor for Athletes in Control, an athlete representation firm. His role at that firm did not offer any obvious clues about his presence at Chiefs camp.

However, Pierce’s connection to Spagnulo goes way back. From 2005 to 2009, Spagnulo was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. Pierce played middle linebacker, acting as the “green dot,” the on-field play-caller for the defense. Their close working relationship during those years likely explains why Pierce felt at home in Kansas City, even in rival colors.
It seems reasonable to assume the visit was friendly, with Spagnulo valuing Pierce’s perspective and experience as a trusted colleague.
What Led to Antonio Pierce’s Departure From the Las Vegas Raiders?
Pierce’s tenure with the Raiders was brief but eventful. After Josh McDaniels was fired following a Week 8 loss to Detroit in 2023, Pierce became the interim head coach in Week 9. The Raiders finished the year with a 5-4 run and ended up 8-9. While the team missed out on the playoffs, Pierce’s energy and connection with the players convinced owner Mark Davis to make him the permanent head coach.
However, things did not go according to plan in the 2024-25 campaign. The Raiders opened at 2-2, then suffered a 10-game losing streak, ultimately closing out the season 4-13. Pierce was fired two days after the end of the regular season, and general manager Tom Telesco was let go shortly after.
Adding a layer of intrigue, Tom Brady had recently become a minority owner of the Raiders. Davis made it clear he wanted Brady to have a significant voice in front office and coaching decisions, even saying, “I want Tom to have a huge voice” in shaping the organization.
Since then, Brady has been deeply involved in many high-profile Raiders decisions. He has played a role in the team’s commitment to defensive end Maxx Crosby, the hiring of Carroll, and the move to bring in quarterback Geno Smith, as reported here and in other outlets. Still, Brady prefers to defer to Davis, Carroll, and new general manager Jon Spytek, as he explained in recent interviews.
Looking ahead, Raiders and Chiefs fans will have to wait until Week 7, October 19, to see these longtime rivals meet at Geha Field at Arrowhead Stadium. For now, Pierce’s visit in Chiefs red is just the latest unexpected twist in the never-dull rivalry between Kansas City and Las Vegas.
