Sometimes tennis transcends competition and becomes something deeper. Clara Tauson found that intersection during the 2025 Canadian Open, where grief and triumph collided in the most emotional way possible. Her path to the semifinals came with a weight far heavier than any racquet – carrying the memory of her grandfather while chasing the biggest win of her season.

She then became visibly emotional, breaking down in tears as she revealed that her grandfather had passed away and that she wanted to “win” the quarterfinals match for him.
“Still in shock. Two days ago, my grandfather unfortunately passed away, so I really wanted to win for him today,” Tauson said.

The semifinals match between Osaka and Tauson will mark only the second encounter between the two players on the WTA Tour. Their previous meeting came at the 2025 ASB Classic final, where Tauson claimed the title after Osaka withdrew from the match due to an abdominal injury. The score stood at 6-4, 0-0 retd. when the former World No. 1 was forced to stop playing.
The winner of the semifinal clash between Osaka and Tauson at the 2025 Canadian Open will advance to the final, where they will face either ninth seed Elena Rybakina or Wild Card Victoria Mboko. For Tauson, every point moving forward carries the weight of her grandfather’s memory and her promise to honor his legacy through her tennis.
