‘Storm Fleeced Them’ – WNBA Fans Shocked After Mystics’ Bold Move To Trade Brittney Sykes for Alysha Clark, Draft Pick

Find out what WNBA fans had to say after Washington Mystics' shocking decision to trade All-Star guard Brittney Sykes to the Seattle Storm.

The Washington Mystics and Seattle Storm recently made a blockbuster trade that has WNBA fans divided. With the August 7 deadline looming, the two franchises struck a deal that surprised many: All-Star guard Brittney Sykes headed to Seattle in exchange for Alysha Clark, Zia Cooke, and the Storm’s first-round pick. The immediate reaction? Social media exploded with fans questioning Washington’s strategy.

Why Are Fans Questioning the Washington Mystics’ Decision?

Sykes was having an excellent season for the Mystics before she was traded. The nine-year veteran averages 15.4 points per game and a career-high 4.4 assists per night, which helped her earn her first WNBA All-Star nod this season. So the question looms: Why did Washington part ways with Sykes? Fans seem to be asking the same question.

One user named @hausravenclaw took to X to pose a similar question, “Whyyyy would the Mystics do this?” Another user was critical of the trade and even deemed that Seattle fleeced Washington, writing “Storm fleeced them lmao.”

However, it hasn’t been all Storm praise from users. @TheBrinkOfGlory, a Cameron Brink fan account, viewed this trade as closer than other users think. “I guess the Storm win this [trade] idk,” they wrote.

The Storm, currently in third place in the Western Conference, will add Sykes to an already stacked roster that includes former MVP Nneka Ogwumike, seven-time WNBA All-Star Skylar Diggins, and veteran star Gabby Williams.

While Sykes is putting up numbers that most teams in the WNBA can use, the Mystics’ decision to part ways with her may seem like a head-scratcher in the short term. Yet it could provide Washington with a massive boost in the future. @miaonfilm replied to the post that the Storm got the better of the trade with a rebuttal of “Have you seen the 2026 first round picks? Mystics def won this trade.”

How Does This Trade Position Washington for 2026?

Trading away Sykes makes it more likely that the Mystics will end up in the lottery and snag an extra first-round pick. Washington already owns the Minnesota Lynx’s 2026 first-round pick, and now they possess three first-round selections in next year’s draft: their own, Minnesota’s, and now Seattle’s.

Washington is extremely well-positioned for the future with an exciting group of young talent, a host of draft picks, and plenty of cap space. The departure of Sykes clears the way for rookie Sonia Citron to become the primary scorer for the rest of the season. Citron is taking the league by storm by putting up 14.3 points and 4.6 rebounds on 45/37/89 shooting splits.

With the 2026 WNBA Draft set to be headlined by great names like Lauren Betts, Azzi Fudd, and Flau’jae Johnson, the Mystics are in a prime position to overhaul their roster in just one draft.
