The offseason didn’t let Boogie Fland catch his breath. He tested his NBA potential, hopped in the transfer portal, and, after an invite to the draft combine, made a huge decision: one more year in college. The twist? He’s doing it in a Florida jersey, not in Arkansas Razorback red. Is this risky, brilliant, or both? Gators fans are still wrapping their heads around what it all means for the 2024-25 campaign.
What’s the Latest With Boogie Fland and the Florida Gators?
Head coach Todd Golden wasted no time landing Fland, the 6’3″ guard who quickly became one of the hottest names in the portal. With Florida looking to reload following a championship season, Fland’s arrival looked like the perfect move. But just as the excitement was building in Gainesville, July brought tough news: Fland had undergone surgery.
According to CBB Insider Jon Rothstein, Fland is already on the mend. “Florida’s Boogie Fland (sports hernia) hopes to be fully cleared for basketball-related activities when the school year officially begins this month, per Todd Golden,” writes Rothstein on X.

Fland had surgery for a sports hernia that knocked him out for much of July. This cost him three weeks of summer workouts. “He’ll be back when school starts,” Golden told ESPN after the procedure. “He could have played through it, but it made more sense to get it taken care of so he didn’t have to worry about it during the season.”
That call could shape the entire season. Fland brings the potential to flip the script for the Gators. At Arkansas, he put up 13.5 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game in just 21 appearances. He managed those stats despite playing through a right thumb injury that also required surgery.
Beyond the numbers, that kind of toughness is exactly what Florida is counting on now. This year, Fland teams up with Princeton transfer Xaivian Lee and Ohio’s AJ Brown. Gators fans are already buzzing about how dangerous that backcourt trio could be.
With the departures of Walter Clayton Jr., Alijah Martin, and Will Richard, the Gators needed new guards who could fill the void. Golden’s moves in the transfer portal look like they might have answered the call. The roster is deep enough that another deep NCAA tournament run is very much in the cards for Florida in 2024-25.
Last year, under Golden’s leadership, Florida finished 36-4, closing out the season with a 12-game win streak. Still, everyone in college hoops knows you never get to coast on past success.

How Could Boogie Fland’s Return Impact Florida’s Championship Hopes?
Despite missing key summer workouts, Fland is expected to bring playmaking, tempo, and vision to the floor. If he plays at the level Arkansas fans saw, Golden will have a key piece for his fast-paced system. Florida fans just need a little patience, Rothstein says it won’t be long until Fland is officially back in action.
Plus, ESPN’s Jeff Borzello is buying what the Gators are building. “Florida has the talent to make another title run. Before UConn won the national championships in 2023 and 2024, men’s college basketball hadn’t seen a repeat title winner since Florida in 2006 and 2007 — but Todd Golden’s Gators have the players to make it a trend,” writes Borzello.
The signs sure look good: returning standouts like Alex Condon, Thomas Haugh, and rim protector Reuben Chinyelu, plus impact newcomers Fland and Lee, all lined up for one purpose. Boogie Fland’s summer hit a speed bump, but his return is on track. Florida’s shot at another title is still alive and kicking.
