‘I Want To Be a Good Example’ – Alexander Zverev Reveals How Having a Daughter Has Changed His Approach to His Career

German tennis star Alexander Zverev credits fatherhood and Roger Federer's example for helping him control his on-court emotions.

Alexander Zverev has come a long way from the days of racket-smashing tantrums and heated exchanges with umpires. Now a father to young daughter Mayla, the German star recently opened up about how parenthood has transformed his on-court mindset. The transformation draws striking parallels to another tennis legend who conquered his own emotional demons.

What Helped Alexander Zverev Leave His On-Court Rage Behind?

The 28-year-old was speaking after a hard-fought three-set win over defending champion Alexei Popyrin in the quarterfinals of the 2025 National Bank Open in Toronto. Despite losing the opening set in a tense tiebreak, Zverev regrouped to take the next two sets 6-4, 6-3. Despite showing flashes of frustration, Zverev managed to maintain control, a stark contrast from the emotional displays that once defined his early years on tour.

Zverev addressed this shift in demeanor during his post-match press conference, crediting fatherhood and a broader sense of personal responsibility for the change. “One is about taking responsibility of who you are as a person,” he said.

The World No. 3 became a father in March 2021 when he and his former girlfriend Brenda Patea welcomed their daughter, Mayla. That moment fundamentally shifted his perspective on legacy and behavior.

“Number one thing, I’ve said it before, but I’m a father now, so I want to be a good example there. Also, you know, I want to be remembered for my tennis. I want to be remembered for what I’ve achieved on the court, for what I’ve done on the tennis court.”

Beyond tennis, Zverev also emphasized the importance of his foundation’s efforts in helping children with type 1 diabetes, a disease he has lived with since the age of four. “Also for the good things I do outside the tennis court as well,” Zverev said.

“Because I feel like there’s quite a lot of work that I do with my foundation, and with my family as well, which can be beneficial and helps people around the world. So I would much rather be known and remembered for that than the outbursts that I used to have, right? Yeah, that’s just something that at some point it just comes.”

How Did Roger Federer Influence Zverev’s Emotional Transformation?

To illustrate his point further, Zverev referenced Roger Federer’s transformation from a temperamental teenager into one of the sport’s most composed and beloved champions. The comparison reveals just how dramatically top players can evolve their on-court personas.

“It came with Roger as well,” he said. “Roger used to have outbursts like crazy, and then he changed, he became Roger Federer, he became this perfection that we all know him as now. But it wasn’t always that case. But, yeah, something in the mind clicked and decided to, yeah, to be different on the court.”

Meanwhile, Zverev is making his seventh appearance at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto. After receiving a first-round bye, he opened his singles campaign with a 7-6(6), 6-4 win over Adam Walton, followed by another comeback against Matteo Arnaldi, prevailing 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2.

He defeated Francisco Cerundolo in the Round of 16 before dispatching Popyrin to reach his maiden semifinals in Toronto. The tournament run represents his best showing at the Canadian event. In doubles, Zverev partnered with Marcelo Melo, though the pair exited in the first round after a straight-sets loss to sixth seeds Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski.
