Colts Drop Surprising QB1 Update Amid Anthony Richardson’s Intense Competition With Daniel Jones

The Colts have released their first unofficial quarterback depth chart, and it paints an unclear picture heading into Thursday's exhibition opener.

The Indianapolis Colts missed the NFL postseason in 2024 after their pedestrian 8-9 record that was due in large part to quarterback Anthony Richardson’s 47 percent completion rate.

In the midst of training camp, Richardson has been battling with quarterback Daniel Jones, a former top-10 pick of the New York Giants who also briefly spent time with the Minnesota Vikings.

While both players want to be the starting quarterback for the Colts when Week 1 arrives, there can only be one player who holds that role.

Colts Haven’t Decided Whether Anthony Richardson or Daniel Jones Will Be Their Starting Quarterback

Based on the latest depth chart that the Colts have released according to a report from ESPN insider Adam Schefter, Indianapolis isn’t exactly clear on which quarterback has the upper hand.

The Colts, who open the 2025 exhibition schedule this Thursday with a game against the Baltimore Ravens, are expected to play one of either Richardson or Jones for the majority of that contest, with the other getting the bulk of the playing time in their next exhibition game against the Green Bay Packers on August 16.

Head coach Shane Steichen said as much on Sunday as his team continued preparations to face the Ravens on Thursday.

“One will play a good amount this game and the other will play a good amount next game,” Steichen said.

“I think it all matters, it all counts,” Steichen continued. “Every rep matters, every walkthrough matters, every meeting matters. It all matters. Everything’s being evaluated.”

Richardson, whom the Colts made the fourth overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, has had a difficult time living up to the lofty expectations that came with his draft position. Meanwhile, Jones was selected with the sixth overall pick by the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft, and also fell short of expectations.

Based on the latest information from the Colts, neither Richardson nor Jones has seized a firm grasp of the starting reins, and the competition between the two will continue until one of them can lay claim to the starting role — at least to begin exhibition play later this week.

The Colts, who once had Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning under center for several years, haven’t had a clear-cut first-round starting quarterback since Andrew Luck, who shocked the sports world with his abrupt retirement from the NFL in August 2019.
