‘Give Me Chain Gang All Day’ — Ex-NFL QB Makes Feelings Clear on League’s New Virtual Measurement System

As fans got a taste of the new rules in the NFL preseason kickoff, ex-journeyman QB Chase Daniel wasn't on board with the new virtual measurement.

The NFL has been evolving as a league to make the product more enjoyable and accurate for its millions of fans. Over the years, that evolution has led to a plethora of changes, both in terms of the production quality and the rules of the sport themselves. From something as critical as the physicality of the game, to something as profound as the rules governing Overtime games, the changes have been plentiful in recent years.

This year was no different, as the league agreed upon a change to its demarkation for first downs, with a virtual system that would track the ball’s movement becoming the deciding factor. Rather than continue with the human error factor of the chain team measuring the ball’s movement, the league opted for a more precise route decider. As fans got a taste of that change in the Hall of Fame Game, a former quarterback wasn’t on board with the revision.

Was the Josh Allen First Down Controversy the Final Straw for the NFL?

The controversy came to a head during the AFC Championship Game between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs. Issues with the old system had been brewing for a while, but that game — and those two powerhouse teams — ended up being the final push for the NFL to make a change.

After the overtime rule change sparked by the 13-second game, this time it was a controversial call — a waved-off first down by Josh Allen on a potential game-winning drive — that drew heavy backlash.

It prompted the change from a real-life crew deciding via chains, to technology virtually measuring downs using a tracker in the football. While it could lead to a more accurate experience during the games, it did reduce some of the human error and accountability in the game.

As a result, former Kansas City quarterback turned analyst, Chase Daniel, took to X to voice his displeasure about the rule change. After more than a decade in the league as a player — for six different teams — and almost four years as an analyst, his preferences about the league’s decision-making were clear.

As the Detroit Lions squared off against the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL Hall of Fame Game of 2025, it didn’t take long to see the new idea in execution.

Using a clip from the first minute of the second quarter, Daniel wrote, “I really don’t know how to feel about this … It’s the new virtual measurement system for first downs … give me chain gang all day.”

In the clip, fans at home could see a digitally produced video of where the football was exactly, leading to the decision by the refs for that particular down.
