Billy Napier Escaped the Hot Seat in 2024, But Analyst Warns DJ Lagway’s Injury Could Bring It Back

DJ Lagway’s calf injury clouds Florida’s season outlook and puts Billy Napier’s job security in doubt, with no return date set as fall camp kicks off.

Florida head coach Billy Napier weathered intense criticism during the 2024 season after a rocky start and mounting external pressure. While he held onto his job, concerns have resurfaced ahead of training camp.

Star quarterback DJ Lagway is sidelined with a calf strain and is currently in a walking boot. With Lagway missing key preseason reps, analysts warn that Napier’s job stability could again be questioned if the team falters early.

DJ Lagway’s Injury Threatens to Reopen Coaching Debate Around Billy Napier

As Florida opens fall camp, DJ Lagway’s health has once again become the center of conversation, and with it, the security of Billy Napier’s job is being revisited. The freshman quarterback, who led the Gators to a 6-1 record in games he started last season, is now in a walking boot with a calf strain.

Coach Billy Napier has not provided a timetable for his return, and the silence is raising eyebrows. Greg McElroy, speaking on a recent show with Matt Barrie, addressed the growing concern.

“If you got a player that’s injury-prone that now goes into the start of fall camp injured, you’re thinking, ‘Oh no, not again,’” he said. “The concern is going to be there with Lagway because we were excited about him. Injured, banged up, excited, injured, banged up, now going into fall camp.”

Lagway has indeed battled a string of injuries. In January 2024, he sustained a foot injury during the Under Armour All-American Game, later experienced shoulder issues in fall camp, and was carted off with a hamstring injury in the Georgia game.

Despite those setbacks, he completed 60 percent of his passes for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. His potential is clear, but his durability remains in question.

McElroy emphasized that Lagway is critical to Florida’s hopes.

“He’s the guy Napier’s pitting his career on there in Gainesville,” he said. “But yeah, the concern is going to be there with Lagway.”

That reality places immense pressure on Napier, who already faced waves of calls for his firing throughout last season.

“How many times during the season was everyone talking about Billy Napier getting fired?” Barrie asked, noting the scrutiny that surrounded the head coach for most of 2024. “Napier’s not going to be there. Who’s going to succeed?”

Napier ultimately delivered an 8-5 record despite facing the toughest schedule in college football, a feat McElroy called “the most impressive eight and five season that we’re not talking about.”

But with Lagway now sidelined and journeyman quarterback Harrison Bailey, who’s had stints at Tennessee, UNLV, and Louisville, expected to take first-team reps, Napier’s margin for error could narrow again.

“I hope the walking boot is just a precaution like some of the reports that are out there and we get him on the field,” McElroy added. “Because he’s going to be one of those exciting players to watch this year.”
