Texas Longhorns defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau had to overcome a difficult situation after returning from a season-ending ACL injury, which is one of the toughest challenges in football.
Even after making a physical recovery, Guilbeau knew the real hurdle wasn’t just his knee; it was gaining his head coach’s trust and finding the mental strength to get back on the field.
Guilbeau Opens Up About HC Steve Sarkisian’s Honest Assessment
Guilbeau got injured during a game against Oklahoma State during his freshman season in 2022, which meant that he was out of games for a lengthy rehab period.
In a new video for the ‘3rd & Longhorn’ podcast, he opened up about his honest talk with Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian about his playing time after his ACL tear recovery. “So I talked to Sark (coach). I’m like, man, why am I not playing?”
While answering why he wasn’t seeing game action despite being medically cleared, Sarkisian said:
“And Sark told me, he was like, Man, I don’t want to put you out there if you’re not 100%. You know what I mean? You can embarrass yourself and the team. So he wanted to put me in the best position to win,” Guilbeau said.
The coach’s words initially upset Guilbeau, but he soon understood their logic. He believed that Sarkisian was not intentionally hurting his feelings but protecting both the player and the team from the chance of a defeat.
“So I told him, I said, I can’t be mad at that. I got to just keep working and put my head down and keep my mental straight,” he said.
Guilbeau knew that getting back to a place of mental health was just as much of a struggle as it was returning to a place of physical health. After spending the better part of a year on the bench, Guilbeau’s self-confidence had cracks in it from being there for most of the year after being a true freshman and establishing himself as a contributor in the secondary.

During the 2024 season, Guilbeau stepped up as one of the main contributors to the Longhorns’ success. He was a starter for several games and also had some notable stats. He made 58 tackles in the whole season, out of which 35 were solo stops, a sack, and three pass breakups.

Guilbeau’s calm demeanor and thoughtful approach, paired with the head coach’s patient handling of his return, turned a difficult injury comeback into a true win-win.
Instead of rushing back impulsively, Guilbeau showed maturity and confidence, traits that not only defined his recovery but also boosted Texas’ title hopes heading into 2025.
