Deion Sanders reveals why doctors joined his cancer update, urging early detection after sharing his bladder cancer diagnosis and recovery.

When Deion Sanders stepped to the podium on July 28, 2025, flanked by doctors and medical staff, Colorado fans knew this wasn’t just another press conference. The emotional 40-minute session would reveal not only Sanders’ bladder cancer diagnosis but also his remarkable recovery story, one designed to save lives across the country.

In a revealing YouTube vlog, Sanders explained his strategic decision to include medical experts at his cancer announcement press conference. The Colorado Buffaloes head coach wanted to amplify the message beyond his own voice, recognizing that medical authority could reach people who might otherwise dismiss health warnings.

Why Did Deion Sanders Bring Doctors to His Cancer Announcement?

In the vlog, Sanders addresses his doctor before his press conference, saying, “You know, it’s one thing hearing from us, but it’s whole another level hearing from you. That’s why I want the country to see you and hear you today so they can understand like this ain’t no play play.”

Coach Prime continued, saying, “This was real, and that’s how we’re going to ultimately help a lot of people, especially men with going to get checkups as well as women going to get themselves together.”

At the press conference, alongside Dr. Janet Kukreja and trainer Lauren Askevold, Sanders stressed the urgency of preventive care.

“Men, everybody, get checked out. Because if it wasn’t for me getting tested for something else, they wouldn’t have stumbled upon this.” He reiterated, “Get checked out. It could’ve been a whole other gathering if I hadn’t.”

How Did Sanders Discover His Cancer and Navigate Treatment?

The diagnosis came through an unexpected discovery during routine medical care. Sanders announced his bladder cancer was found during a vascular exam for prior blood clot issues, leading to surgery that removed his bladder entirely.

Kukreja declared him “cured of cancer,” though she acknowledged the adjustment period ahead. “It is a learning curve, for sure,” she said regarding his postsurgical life, with part of his small intestine used to create a new bladder.

The physical toll was significant. Sanders, who lost 25 pounds during treatment, shared the reality of his recovery: “This was not an easy task… It was dynamic. It was tough.” With characteristic humor, he addressed the practical challenges, saying, “I can’t pee like I used to… I depend on Depends… If you see a port-a-potty on the sideline, it is real.”

What Does Sanders’ Recovery Mean for Colorado’s 2025 Season?

Throughout his treatment, Sanders maintained remarkable focus on protecting his team’s preparation. Trainer Lauren Askevold praised his resilience, saying, “He never folded one time and never wavered.”

The coach kept his diagnosis private, even from his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, and star player Travis Hunter, explaining, “They didn’t know what the extent of it was… so they could be focused on making the team and not focused on dad.”

Now, despite facing significant health challenges, including past blood clot surgeries and toe amputations, Sanders is set to lead Colorado into the 2025 season. This marks his third year with the Buffaloes, following a successful 9-4 campaign in 2024-25.

With Shedeur, Shilo, and Hunter now in the NFL, Sanders faces a quarterback competition between freshman Julian Lewis and transfer Kaidon Salter.

As Dr. Kukreja noted, Coach Prime is ready to return to the sideline with renewed purpose. His cancer journey, while challenging, has become another platform for the advocacy and mentorship that defines his coaching philosophy.

The port-a-potty jokes aside, Sanders’ message remains serious: early detection saves lives, and no one should face health challenges in silence.
