Myles Garrett, Joe Flacco Make Feelings Clear on Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel Amid Browns’ QB1 Battle

Myles Garrett on how Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel are working together to improve rather than competing against in Browns training camp.

The Cleveland Browns quarterback room could be a powder keg of tension and competition. Four players vying for one starting spot, two untested rookies trying to prove themselves, a veteran fighting to reclaim his career. How Are Sanders and Gabriel Building Chemistry Instead of Competition?

Myles Garrett has watched plenty of position battles during his NFL career, but the dynamic between rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel caught his attention for all the right reasons.

Rather than the cutthroat competition you might expect, the two quarterbacks have formed an alliance focused on mutual improvement.

“I’ve really seen that they help each other and they work together,” Garrett said at training camp. “The guys are not afraid to make a mistake, go out there and try to make a play… they’re not afraid to seek each other out and make each other better.”

This collaborative approach extends beyond just the rookies. Both Sanders and Gabriel have actively sought guidance from veteran Joe Flacco, who has embraced his mentoring role with enthusiasm. The 40-year-old quarterback sees potential in both young players and enjoys working with them.

“It’s been a lot of fun. Those guys are good,” Flacco said. “They got a good head on their shoulders… there’s football going around, stories going around, it really has been a lot of fun.”

What Does Kenny Pickett’s Injury Mean for the Rookie Quarterbacks?

The early portion of training camp established a clear hierarchy in the quarterback room. Sanders, selected 144th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, and Gabriel, taken 94th overall, showed promise during offseason practices but found themselves working primarily with lower units during the first week.

Flacco and Kenny Pickett received the majority of first-team reps, with Sanders relegated to fourth-team duties while Gabriel worked with reserve units. However, circumstances shifted dramatically when Pickett, who had been getting the most work with the starting offense, injured his hamstring near the end of Saturday’s practice.

The injury immediately allows both rookies to showcase their abilities with higher-level competition. Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Monday’s practice will feature adjustments to the quarterback rotation, ensuring all available players stay prepared for the preseason games ahead.

This development could accelerate Sanders’ and Gabriel’s timelines for demonstrating whether their collaborative approach in the meeting rooms translates to success on the field with Cleveland’s top offensive players.
