The 2025 WNBA season has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. That’s not just for teams, but also for players and their relationships with fans. Frustrations have boiled over on and off the court, with stars like Kelsey Plum recently facing backlash for her blunt reaction when a fan asked her to sign sports trading cards.
But in stark contrast, Sabrina Ionescu of the New York Liberty is showing what the magic of the WNBA is really about, and the internet can’t stop talking about it.
Young Liberty Fan Overjoyed After Getting Gift From Sabrina Ionescu
After the New York Liberty’s victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Friday, July 25, a post on Instagram took the spotlight just as much as the win. In the viral post, a young Liberty fan is seen overcome with emotion with tears streaming down her face as she clutches a signed Ionescu jersey.

“Tears of happiness. It doesn’t take much to make someone’s day. We surprised Emery with tickets to see her favorite team, the @nyliberty, and her favorite player @sabrina_i Sabrina took time to sign her jersey. That made her year. And mine. #ThankYou #Grateful #everyonewatcheswomenssports @wnba,” read the caption of the post.
The gesture clearly meant the world to the young Liberty fan, and as the moment spread across social media, it quickly reached Ionescu herself as the Liberty star responded by commenting on the post with four heart emojis.

A middle schooler from A.D. Oliver named Ashton Piner was left beaming after he not only snapped a photo with Ionescu but also walked away with a pair of her signed sneakers.
On the court, Ionescu has been just as impressive as she has been off it. She is currently averaging 18.9 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game. Her performance on July 25 clearly showed her leadership as she dropped 29 points to lead the Liberty to their 17th win of the season.
“Not all players are great passers. There’s some elite ones, and I’ve coached some great ones in Diana Taurasi and Sabrina’s right up there,” said HC Sandy Brondello on Ionescu during the postgame conference.
Early in that game, Phoenix looked like it had the momentum, finishing the first quarter with a four-point lead. But the Liberty rallied in the second quarter to tie it at halftime. The second half was all New York, with the team erupting for 43 points, which was too much for the Mercury to handle.
Now sitting at the top of the Eastern Conference with a 17–6 record, the Liberty are ready to face the Los Angeles Sparks on July 26 at Barclays Center.
