Nick Saban’s retirement didn’t go as quietly as most expected. The legendary former Alabama head coach was supposed to hang up his whistle and slip out of the spotlight. That was the plan, right? But now, with a lifetime of football in his rearview and a future full of question marks, fans can’t help but wonder: Is Saban really done with coaching, or is something big about to pull him back in?
Why Did Nick Saban Hint at an NFL Return With the Cleveland Browns?
Retiring from coaching is much like retiring from boxing or mixed martial arts. Everybody acts like they’re stepping away for good, but the game has a way of pulling coaches right back in. The thrill of new challenges, another chance to win, and the competitive itch don’t fade away. Football is in their blood for many people, and there’s always another reason to be part of the action.
With Saban, it’s not about the money. He could live like Scrooge McDuck, but that’s not what keeps him fired up. Those who know him say it’s all about the competition. There’s a spark for him just being on the turf, coaching, and chasing another win. Sure, the grind of long days and late nights burns out plenty of coaches, but sometimes the taste of winning makes it all worth it.
Since leaving Alabama, Saban has kept plenty busy. He spent the 2024-25 campaign as part of ESPN’s “College GameDay” crew. Recently, on “Fox and Friends,” he talked about the unexpected coaching itch returning during a normal household chore.

“I never thought about getting back into coaching until two days ago,” Saban said. “Ms. Terry said I had to run the sweeper downstairs. So, while I was running the sweeper, the thought occurred to me, when you’re a coach, you have a job a heck of a lot better than this.”
For those catching up, Ms. Terry is Saban’s wife, and she’s not shy about giving him chores. Once coaching stops, life off the field means more time spent ticking off her to-do list. While keeping up with those tasks and co-hosting a pregame show, Saban also works with politicians to encourage stronger NIL guidelines.
“It’s exciting to still be involved in the game,” said Saban.

Meanwhile, one possible destination for Saban caught plenty of attention: the Cleveland Browns. PFSN writer Pedro Narduchi talked about the potential return. The scenario isn’t far-fetched. Saban could, in theory, go back to the team where he was the defensive coordinator from 1991 to 1994.
Saban would expect control if he stepped into the lead role in Cleveland. That means more than having a voice; he’d want real power in the building. On the upside, quarterback controversies would probably vanish because Saban isn’t known for indecision. If he came in, he’d put his stamp on the franchise from day one.
Leaving college football right as the NIL era took off, Saban faces a new reality: players making serious money, sometimes more than their coach. For someone used to running the show and being the loudest voice in the room, handling a locker room full of millionaires could be a real challenge.
