As training camp moves forward in full swing for all 32 teams, the focus of the NFL world has been mainly on the quarterback competition in the Cleveland Browns locker room. After signing Joe Flacco, trading for Kenny Pickett, and drafting both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, the Browns have many options on the table for their QB1 position.
However, head coach Kevin Stefanski hasn’t elevated any one name above the rest as the summer continues. As a result, all four players continue to enjoy significant reps in a quest to prove themselves better than the rest. As the second day of training camp came to a conclusion, everyone wanted to know if their fifth-round pick, and arguably most popular name from the bunch, Sanders, had a chance of overcoming the odds against him.
Shedeur Sanders Shines In Limited Role
Ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, the quarterback race in the class was a two-person battle between Sanders and the eventual first overall pick, Cam Ward. Unfortunately for the former, losing that race came at a very steep price.
From a projected first-round guarantee, Sanders fell to the fifth round, where Cleveland finally picked him up with the 144th overall pick, 50 picks after already selecting Gabriel in the third round. As a result, his entire career trajectory has seen a dramatic shift.
From a potential career as a lifelong starter, the son of the legendary Deion Sanders now finds himself embroiled in a fierce quarterback battle, where his positioning in the league is up for debate. As a result, each day at training camp is a pivotal test in his NFL journey.
At the end of Day 2, the official ESPN Cleveland page assembled a compilation of the four quarterbacks’ stats. The page provided updates throughout the offseason, so the results from training camp were obviously under a greater microscope.
To round off a few things from the get-go, no quarterback recorded a touchdown, with Pickett being the only name to surrender an interception. Additionally, the page added, “Note that Kenny Pickett also had a fumbled snap.”
Beyond those numbers, their exact passing numbers could only leave folks confused. Flacco went 4/10, while Pickett and Gabriel missed just two passes apiece on 11 and eight attempts, respectively.
In terms of efficiency, none of the other three names compares to the Colorado Buffaloes’ superstar, who did not miss a single attempt, albeit on a total of just four tries.

But for those keeping track, it was a dramatic turnaround from Day 1, where Sanders was the least efficient at 3/8, while both Pickett and Gabriel logged 6/7 nights, and Flacco went perfect in his five throws.
Additionally, over the two days combined, Gabriel remains the only quarterback to have recorded a touchdown, as he threw one on the first day of training camp.
With barely a week left before the preseason gets underway, the product each of these quarterbacks is putting forward isn’t making Stefanski’s job any easier.
