Mark Pope’s Recruiting Strategy for Kentucky’s First 2027 Offer Revealed by No. 1 Prospect’s Father

Mark Pope is making 2027 recruit Baba Oladotun a top priority for Kentucky, maintaining daily contact and showing up to the elite recruit’s games.

When Mark Pope made Baba Oladotun Kentucky’s first offer in the 2027 recruiting class back in September, he wasn’t just throwing out a courtesy scholarship. The Wildcats’ head coach was making a statement about the future of his program, targeting the consensus No. 1 prospect in the class who’s already drawing comparisons to Kevin Durant.

Now, Oladotun’s father is revealing just how serious Pope’s pursuit has become and how the coach is winning over recruits at a program desperate for more success.

How Has Mark Pope Approached Baba Oladotun’s Recruitment?

In a conversation with KSR+, Ibrahim Oladotun shared insights into Kentucky HC Mark Pope’s recruiting strategy with his son, 2027 five-star recruit Baba Oladotun. The approach has been built on consistent presence and daily communication.

“[Mark] Pope has been very communicative,” Ibrahim said. “He’s watched a lot of games and is very visible. I love his presence. Everywhere he goes, I see him in the crowd. Coach [Jason] Hart as well. They’re pretty much in touch every day.”

This hands-on approach shows Pope’s commitment to building relationships beyond just extending offers. A campus visit could be on the horizon, though no date has been set.

“It’s something that will probably arise at some point,” Ibrahim added.

Meanwhile, the family is considering a possible reclassification to the 2026 class, though no decision has been made. This potential move would accelerate Oladotun’s timeline and create an even more competitive recruiting situation.

Beyond Oladotun, Kentucky has extended offers to several other high-level 2027 prospects, including CJ Rosser and Obinna Ekezie Jr. Pope, who completed his first season as Kentucky’s head coach in 2024, is working to restore the program’s national championship pedigree.

As the 2027 cycle unfolds, his staff continues to widen its recruiting reach, staying aggressive with top-tier prospects across the country.

What Makes Baba Oladotun Such a Coveted 2027 Recruit?

Baba Oladotun’s skill set has drawn comparisons to Kevin Durant, and it’s easy to see why. The James Hubert Blake High School standout from Silver Spring, Maryland, also plays for Team Durant’s AAU program, creating a fitting connection to his NBA comparison.

The 6’9″ small forward possesses a polished offensive game with the ability to hit off-balance shots from multiple spots on the floor, including from beyond the arc. His combination of length, versatility, and scoring touch makes him one of the most sought-after recruits in the 2027 class.

Oladotun’s work ethic matches his talent level. According to the player himself, his daily routine includes around 250 off-the-dribble pull-up jumpers, along with focused work on ball handling, finishing at the rim, and strengthening his inside-out game.

Long-term development remains a priority for Oladotun and his father, Ibrahim, who envisions his son’s clear path to the NBA. The versatility that makes Oladotun so attractive to college programs also projects well to the professional level.

“He can do it all,” Ibrahim told the Herald-Leader. “Some people (see Baba) as a three, a two, a power forward. But you also see him bring the ball down. He just has a good feel for the game.”

That journey will include at least one year of college basketball. Kentucky, among others, is already working to be a part of it, with Pope’s persistent approach setting the foundation for what could be a crucial recruitment for the Wildcats’ future.
