The Pittsburgh Steelers made one of the biggest splashes of the offseason by signing future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. While the deal didn’t come quickly, it came on Pittsburgh’s terms, a reflection of calculated patience from the front office and a strong sense of direction.
On Wednesday at Steelers training camp, GM Omar Khan spoke publicly about the risk and reward that surrounded the organization’s pursuit of Rodgers.
Khan Says Steelers “Felt Comfortable” Taking Their Time With Aaron Rodgers
Khan confirmed the Steelers were never panicked, despite Rodgers remaining unsigned for months after his release from the New York Jets.
“If there was a point where we didn’t think we would end up where we wanted to end up, then we would’ve gone in a different direction. We felt comfortable and good about it. We wanted Aaron Rodgers and Aaron Rodgers wanted to be a Steeler, and it worked out,” Khan said.
Steelers GM Omar Khan about if the organization ever felt waiting for Aaron Rodgers was going to backfire on them:

While there were questions externally about whether waiting too long would cost Pittsburgh the opportunity to solidify its quarterback plans, Khan insisted the front office stayed level-headed.
Rodgers became a free agent for the first time in his career this March after a tumultuous stint with the Jets, which ended following a devastating Achilles injury in Week 1 of the 2023 season. Though initially linked to multiple teams, the Steelers emerged as a top contender, especially after Rodgers took his time deciding between retirement and a fresh start.
Eventually, he signed a one-year, $13.65 million deal in early June, right before the start of minicamp. For a franchise known for its stability, culture, and consistency, Rodgers’ late addition was anything but traditional. Still, Khan believes the move exemplifies Pittsburgh’s poise, not hesitation.
No Further Additions Planned as Training Camp Opens
With Rodgers in place, Khan also noted the roster is mostly set entering training camp. That means no further additions at wide receiver or free safety are expected, positions some expected Pittsburgh to address with more urgency.
This confidence stems in part from the belief that Rodgers will elevate the play of those around him. While 41 years old and coming off an injury, Rodgers appears energized by his fresh start in Pittsburgh. Adding to the offseason buzz, Rodgers recently revealed he’s been wearing a wedding ring, confirming he got married earlier this year, his second ring this year, in a sense.
Whether Rodgers’ arrival translates to postseason success remains to be seen, but Khan’s clarity about the team’s offseason decisions gives insight into a front office that believes in the process just as much as the result.
