The Kansas City Chiefs walked off the field in February knowing they’d just experienced something they hadn’t felt in years: complete offensive helplessness. Patrick Mahomes had all the weapons he needed during the 2024-25 regular season, but Kansas City’s passing attack crumbled when the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense stepped up in Super Bowl 59.
Now, with training camp approaching and the roster still lacking a proven deep threat, one name keeps surfacing in discussions around Arrowhead. Gabe Davis remains unsigned, and his history against the Chiefs makes him an intriguing option for a team that desperately needs to solve its receiver puzzle.
Could Gabe Davis Be the Answer to Kansas City’s Receiver Problems?
The Chiefs’ 2024-25 season was dominant but unusual in several ways. Offensively, Kansas City didn’t score 30 points in a single game until the AFC Championship against the Buffalo Bills. Even so, they finished the regular season with 15 wins and only two losses.
However, that success wasn’t enough in the Super Bowl, where the lack of reliable targets for Mahomes became a major issue. The Eagles’ secondary shut down the Chiefs’ receivers, and the offense struggled to respond. During the offseason, Kansas City did not address that concern in free agency.

This is where Davis enters the conversation. He’s a low-cost, still-young option who could give Mahomes another vertical threat while the team tries to expand its offensive arsenal. Jacob Infante listed the Chiefs as one of Davis’s likely destinations in a recent PFSN article:
“Davis is only 26 years old, so he should have plenty of football left in him, even after his injury. He would be best suited in an offense that allows him to maximize his vertical capabilities. That said, keep an eye on some playoff contenders to consider him on a discounted one-year deal before he signs another contract next offseason.”

Why Would Kansas City Need Davis Right Now?
The Chiefs could pursue Davis because of the expected wide receiver Rashee Rice suspension. He recently pleaded guilty to a car crash that happened in Dallas during the 2024 offseason and is expected to be punished by the NFL soon.
Kansas City already experienced life without Rice during the 2024-25 season, when he tore his right MCL in Week 4. The offense missed his presence, and even though the team adapted, limitations were apparent.
Rice is projected to miss the first month of the 2025-26 season. That would leave the Chiefs relying heavily on Xavier Worthy, Hollywood Brown, and an aging Travis Kelce, whose production has declined over the past two years.
Davis could fill that gap. He’s still only 26, coming off a down year with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he played only 10 games, posted just over 200 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and was later released.

Meanwhile, his best game as a pro came against the Chiefs in the playoffs in January 2022, when he caught eight passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns. While that performance happened a while ago, it could motivate Davis to return to form while there’s still time.
