Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice, who caused a six-vehicle crash while speeding on a Dallas highway, was recently sentenced to five years of probation. The NFL is expected to issue a suspension, and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has finally broken his silence on the situation.
Andy Reid Speaks Out on Rashee Rice Situation as NFL Suspension Looms
In April 2024, Rice was reportedly driving 119 mph on a Dallas, Texas highway when he crashed into another vehicle, causing a six-car pileup.
Following an investigation by the Dallas County Police Department, a district court judge ruled on July 17 that Rice will serve five years of probation and 30 days in jail, which can be completed at any point during the probation period.
Following the judge’s ruling, many expect the NFL to suspend Rice. While the league’s decision is still pending, Rice has reported to Chiefs training camp, and Reid has spoken publicly about the situation for the first time since the sentencing.
According to A to Z Sports, Reid said that until the NFL makes its decision, the Chiefs will proceed with Rice in training camp as usual.
“As far as Rashee goes, I mean, that’s obvious news out there now,” Reid said. “We’re going to progress as normal with him. He’ll go in and take all the reps that he’d normally take, and we always rotate that position.”
When asked about the length of Rice’s expected suspension, Reid said he hasn’t heard anything yet.
“No,” Reid said. “I don’t have anything.”
Rice was a key part of the Chiefs’ 2023-2024 season during his rookie year, helping Kansas City win the Super Bowl. He caught 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns, making him the Chiefs’ leading wide receiver that year.

Rice suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 4 of the 2024-2025 season, but he dominated in the first three games, catching 24 passes for 288 yards. He has fully recovered and is now a full participant in Chiefs training camp.
While Rice will miss some time due to an expected NFL suspension, Reid’s comments make it clear that Kansas City is preparing the young wide receiver to be one of the team’s top players when he returns for the 2025-2026 season.
Rice’s absence will be felt during his suspension, but as Reid explained, the Chiefs are rotating reps among their wide receivers to ensure the others are ready to step up while Rice is sidelined.
