Holger Rune recently opened up about his experience working with Andre Agassi. The Danish tennis star was seen training under Agassi’s watchful eye at the Citi DC Open.
Rune last competed at the ATP 500 hard-court tournament in Washington in 2022. He was seeded ninth and began his campaign in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. In his opening match, he defeated Benoît Paire but lost to wild card J. J. Wolf in the third round.
How Did Holger Rune’s Training With Andre Agassi Come About?
After finishing his grass court season at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, Rune is set to start his hard court season at the 2025 Citi DC Open. He was recently seen working with Agassi at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center. The former World No. 4 does not have Agassi as his coach; instead, it was a three-day mentoring arrangement.
While speaking to the media before beginning his run at the Citi DC Open, Rune revealed that he was the one who had approached Agassi for mentoring him some months back.
“I reached out to him some months ago. He’s an amazing man, first of all, and he’s very wise, as well. He sees the game in a unique way that I’ve never experienced before,” Rune said.
The Dane stated that the reason he reached out to the former World No. 1 was to pick his brain and also improve some elements in his game.
“I thought now was a good moment to reach out to Agassi because my base is back and I’m playing well again. When you’re changing coaches a lot, you don’t play as well because you’re not following one opinion or a single structure. It’s not anything magic, but he obviously had some very wise words I can use,” he continued.

Rune acknowledged that he believes he has “potential,” and during the three days of working with Agassi, the American provided him with valuable pointers that he is trying to incorporate into his game.
“I obviously have big potential, and I know I can do a lot better. Those three days was a kind of beginning of feeling things out, him giving me some advice, and me trying to do it on the court to see how it feels. My goal was always to be No. 1; it still is, and I believe I can do it,” Rune added.
Who Will Holger Rune Face in His Opening Match at the 2025 Citi DC Open?
Rune received a wild card entry into the main draw of the 2025 Citi DC Open. He is seeded third and will begin his campaign in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. In his opening match, he will face either Alexandre Müller or qualifier Beibit Zhukayev.

Müller will enter the ATP 500 hard-court tournament after competing in the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, where he lost in the first round to Novak Djokovic. Meanwhile, Zhukayev secured his place in the main draw in Washington, DC by defeating James McCabe and Andrea Vavassori in the qualifying rounds.
Rune has never faced Müller or Zhukayev on the ATP Tour, so his match-up in the second round of the Citi DC Open will be their first encounter. The winner will advance to the third round, where they will face either the 13th seed Alex Michelsen, Zizou Bergs, or wild card Dan Evans.
