Cowboys Star Micah Parsons Takes Major Decision on Training Camp Participation Amid Ongoing Contract Dispute

Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons has decided on whether he will attend the training camp without getting a contract extension.

Micah Parsons has been eligible for a contract extension since last year, but the Dallas Cowboys are yet to pay him. It’s already cost the NFC East team millions, as the market value for top defensive players has skyrocketed this year.

The Cowboys will begin their training camp in Oxnard, California, on July 21. Will Parsons take part, or will he hold out until he gets a new deal? Well, the four-time Pro Bowler has made his decision.

Micah Parsons Shows His Commitment to Cowboys Without New Contract

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Parsons will attend the Cowboys’ training camp in Oxnard. Over the last few months, the star defensive player repeatedly mentioned that he would not holdout for a contract, and it’s now confirmed that he will indeed report to training camp despite his future remaining unresolved.

The Cowboys selected Parsons with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and since then, he has arguably been their best player. In recent years, Dallas has paid out significant money to its star players, and the general expectation around the league is that owner Jerry Jones will sort out Parsons’ contract situation before the start of the regular season.

The Cowboys are infamous for dragging out contract negotiations throughout the offseason. The franchise took a similar approach with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb before eventually signing them to lucrative extensions. Here are the details of some of the big contracts offered by Dallas recently:

  1. Prescott: Four-year, $240 million.
  2. Lamb: Four-year, $136 million.
  3. Trevon Diggs: Five-year, $97 million.

With T.J. Watt signing a three-year, $123 million extension earlier this month, the price for Parsons has increased significantly.

The Cowboys will now have to pay the 26-year-old linebacker nearly $45 million annually to retain him. Moreover, Parsons would ideally like a five-year extension as he is still very young. If that happens, he will become the first defensive player in NFL history to land a contract worth over $200 million in total value.

Many believe Parsons is on a Hall of Fame trajectory, and he’s widely viewed as deserving of being the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league. The Cowboys star has made the Pro Bowl every year in his first four NFL seasons. He has also earned First-Team All-Pro honors twice.

The Penn State product also recorded top-three finishes in the Defensive Player of the Year race in 2022 and 2023. Without him, the Cowboys could arguably have one of the worst defenses in the league. So, Jerry Jones and Co. must get a deal done before Dallas’ Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
