LSU landed a major in-state prize Thursday when Lamar Brown, a standout from University Lab in Baton Rouge, announced his commitment. Known for his elite versatility and explosive play, Brown is widely viewed as one of the most dynamic recruits in the country.
Brown’s rise has already sparked comparisons to two-way star and Heisman winner Travis Hunter.
What Makes LSU’s Lamar Brown Worthy of a Travis Hunter Comparison?
Brown has emerged as one of the most talked-about names in the 2026 recruiting cycle, not only for his on-field dominance but also for the Hunter comparisons.
Rivals’ national analyst Charles Power detailed why Brown is such a rare find on “The Inside Scoop,” calling him the “Travis Hunter of linemen” for his ability to impact both sides of the line.
“Lamar Brown is a unique prospect,” Power said. “I think of him as the Travis Hunter of linemen. This is a guy who’s played a lot of offensive line to this point in high school, but probably projects as primarily a defensive lineman moving forward.”
Brown’s athleticism defies typical positional limits. At 6’4″ and 285 pounds, he clocked a 40-yard dash in the 4.8-second range at the Under Armour Camp in New Orleans, a time that reflects his rare explosiveness.
“He can really move,” Power said. “So much versatility and so much athleticism. He’s really a freak physically.”
The LSU commit attends University Lab, which sits on LSU’s campus, making his decision to stay home all the more significant.
“LSU has to be ecstatic to get him in the fold,” Power said. “He’s a hometown guy. A huge get for them and a guy who I think you have to project as an impact player.”
How Does Brown Fit into Brian Kelly’s Vision?
Brown’s role in LSU’s recruiting class is viewed as foundational, as head coach Brian Kelly and his staff prioritize high-upside, flexible athletes.
“There are so many avenues for him being a successful, big-time college player,” Power noted.
With a unique mix of size, speed, and skill, Brown draws justified comparisons to Hunter, not for playing the same positions, but for redefining what versatility looks like at the highest level.
Brown expressed his gratitude and explained the rationale behind his commitment,
“It’s something not a lot of kids from Baton Rouge get to do, honestly,” Brown told ESPN. “Everyone wants to play at Tiger Stadium. I’m blessed to be going to play there.”
His pledge marks a significant victory for Kelly’s staff as they assemble a top-tier recruiting class.
