Former MVP Cam Newton Reveals Why Josh Allen Is Best QB in NFL Over Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson

Cam Newton declared Josh Allen the NFL's best quarterback after his MVP-worthy 2024 season, despite Allen's ongoing playoff struggles.

Josh Allen walked into the 2024-25 season with everything to prove and almost nothing left to work with. His top two receivers were gone, the doubters were circling, and the pressure was mounting. Then he delivered what many consider an MVP-worthy performance, silencing critics while raising an even bigger question about his place among the league’s elite.

Why Does Cam Newton Consider Josh Allen the Best QB in the NFL?

Former MVP Cam Newton didn’t mince words when discussing Allen’s exceptional 2024-25 campaign on his “4th&1 With Cam Newton” podcast. The 2015 MVP winner made a compelling case for the Buffalo Bills quarterback that went beyond traditional statistics.

“Josh Allen had nothing,” Newton said. “Preseason had nothing. What is he going to do with Gabe Davis’ departure? What is he going to do with the departure of Stefon Diggs? And he’s done nothing but have an MVP: number two, Lamar Jackson. We have to stop.”

Newton’s point centered on how Allen exceeded expectations despite losing his top weapons. The former Panthers quarterback then doubled down on his assessment of Allen’s MVP-worthy performance.

“He had his best year statistically and could very well have been the MVP,” Newton continued. “In my eyes, he was the MVP. Yeah, I feel like he was, too. Patrick Mahomes is probably this era’s most skillful, talented quarterback. You can’t do that without acknowledging that you have subtle skills around him.”

How Did Allen Succeed Despite Losing His Top Weapons?

Newton’s assessment gains weight when examining what Allen accomplished with a dramatically altered receiving corps. Davis departed Buffalo for Jacksonville last offseason, taking with him 183 career receptions and 27 touchdown receptions from Allen. Meanwhile, Diggs wanted out and seemed disconnected from the team’s goals.

The numbers tell the story of Allen’s adaptability. In Davis’s absence, wide receiver Khalil Shakir led the team with just 76 receptions. The quarterback’s other primary targets were tight end Dalton Kincaid and running back James Cook, who tallied 44 and 32 receptions, respectively. Allen transformed this patchwork group into an effective offensive unit.

Can Allen’s Regular Season Success Translate to Playoff Glory?

However, the discussion about Allen being the league’s best quarterback inevitably returns to his playoff record. In 13 postseason games, the 29-year-old quarterback holds a 7-6 record. While he has posted a solid 65.7% completion percentage in the playoffs, the Bills have repeatedly fallen short when the stakes are highest.

Allen’s decision-making under pressure remains a focal point of criticism. With two minutes remaining in crucial situations, needing just five yards to convert a fourth down, Allen has sometimes chosen the aggressive deep throw over the safer short-yardage option. These gambles, while showcasing his arm talent, have cost the Bills at critical moments.

As the new season approaches, the question remains whether Allen can finally get the Bills to the Super Bowl. His regular season excellence is undeniable, but championship success will ultimately define his legacy and validate Newton’s bold claim about his status among the NFL’s elite.
