Marcel Reed waited two years for this moment. With Conner Weigman gone and the spotlight entirely on him, the redshirt sophomore quarterback has everything he needs to prove he’s the leader Texas A&M has been searching for.
Why Does Mike Elko Believe Marcel Reed Is Ready for the Starting Role?
During an interview on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” head coach Mike Elko praised Reed’s progress after a challenging 2024 season.
“He got thrust into some really tough, some really difficult situations last year, and now he goes into this year as the clear starter,” said Elko.
Elko’s confidence stems from what he witnessed during Reed’s baptism by fire.
“I think he did a really good job of taking the steps he needed in terms of learning the game, learning the offense, learning how to study defenses, and I think you’re just going to see him be an absolute difference maker this year for the Aggies,” the Texas A&M head coach continued.
Reed’s ascension to QB1 follows the transfer of former starter Weigman to Houston, cementing his role as the program’s face. With a strengthened offensive line, talented running backs, and new weapons in the passing game, Elko believes Reed’s development positions the Aggies for a potential College Football Playoff run.
How Did Reed Transform From Backup to Leader?
Reed’s journey to the starting role began when he stepped in for the injured Weigman in 2024. He started the final five games, including a significant comeback win over No. 8 LSU.
“He stepped into a difficult spot and put us in a position to win a lot of football games,” Elko noted.
However, Reed’s fundamental transformation happened during the offseason. Since January, Reed has organized receiver workouts and dived into the playbook with coaches.
“From the second he got back from his winter break, I think he stepped into the building as the guy who’s going to be the starting quarterback,” Elko said at the 2025 SEC Media Days.
The leadership extends beyond just studying film. Teammates have rallied around Reed’s energy. According to Elko, he’s a guy people want to play for and want to play with, noting Reed’s role in attracting transfer receivers like wideouts KC Concepcion and Mario Craver.
During Concepcion’s visit, he was won over watching Reed practice, telling Elko, “You were right. (Marcel Reed) can spin it.” Meanwhile, offensive guard Ar’Maj Reed-Adams praised Reed’s leadership, recalling how he challenged receivers to catch every pass in drills.
With a talented roster and Reed’s leadership, the Aggies aim to capitalize on their 8-5 record in 2024 and contend in the SEC. As Reed prepares to lead on the field and in the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council, his growth shows that Texas A&M is a program on the rise, ready to make waves in 2025.
