Chargers’ 4-Time Pro Bowler Breaks Silence on WR Mike Williams’ Surprising Retirement From NFL

Chargers 4-time Pro Bowler expressed deep sadness over a close teammate’s unexpected retirement as the team prepares for the 2025 season.

The silence in the Chargers locker room speaks louder than any stat sheet. While Mike Williams’ retirement shocked the football world, it’s the quiet moments between teammates that reveal the true weight of losing someone who meant more than yards and touchdowns.

What Did Derwin James Say About Mike Williams’ Retirement?

The four-time Pro Bowl safety didn’t hold back when asked about Williams stepping away from the game at just 30 years old.

“I’m gonna miss him a lot,” James said. “I built a bond with him and Keenan Allen over the years. … My brother, bigger than football.”

Williams officially informed the Chargers of his retirement on July 16, 2025, just hours before the team was scheduled to report for training camp. The timing caught many off guard, especially considering Williams had re-signed with Los Angeles just months earlier on a one-year deal after brief stints with the Jets and Steelers in 2024.

Adding to the unexpected nature of the announcement, Williams had been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list earlier this month due to lingering injuries.

For James, though, the news wasn’t just about losing a teammate on the field. It was losing a presence that had been part of his day-to-day life for years.

The two had grown close over their time together with the Chargers. Drafted a year apart, Williams in 2017 and James in 2018, their relationship stretched far beyond the field. That connection was also shared with wide receiver Keenan Allen, forming a trio that helped define the Chargers’ identity over the past several seasons.

James’ words were simple, but full of weight. “My brother,” he said. “Bigger than football.”

How Will Williams Be Remembered Beyond the Numbers?

While fans and analysts focus on statistics, standout performances, and the team’s depth chart before camp, it’s clear that James isn’t thinking about football right now.

It all comes down to friendship. Years of conversations, battles on the field, laughter in the locker room, and shared experiences.

Williams finishes with 330 catches, 5,104 receiving yards, and 32 touchdowns over his NFL career. He had two 1,000-yard seasons throughout his eight-year career, and in 2019, he topped the league in yards per reception.

However, those numbers only tell part of the story for those like James, who shared the same locker room with him.

Williams did more than just make plays. He was family.

And now, as Williams steps away from the game, what will stick with James the most is the bond they built together. Not the routes or the touchdowns.
