The Tennis Hall of Fame Open recently rejected Bill Ackman’s $10 million gift after a rife controversy loomed around his participation in the challenger event. After comments of criticism led by renowned tennis star Andy Roddick, the authority cited the avoidance of “any perception of impropriety” as the reason behind this move.
Tennis Hall of Fame Rejects Bill Ackman’s $10 Million Offer
Bill Ackman, 59, played in a professional tennis match alongside retired pro Jack Sock, but they were defeated in straight sets by a lesser-known duo. The match took place at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. The event is known to be a historic summer spot once popular with wealthy industrialists during the Gilded Age.
Their match was part of the Hall of Fame Open, an official event on the ATP Challenger tour. This meant that, for at least one day, Mr. Ackman could call himself a professional tennis player. Achieving this had been a lifelong dream for him. However, according to his humorous admission, it may also have marked the end of his brief tennis career.
Following his defeat, a major controversy loomed around the challenger event over handing him the wild card. The authorities decided to deny the $10 million gift that he offered following the disappointing exit.
Breaking the news, Front Office Sports’ official X account shared a post, stating:

Ackman is a billionaire hedge fund manager and founder of Pershing Square Capital Management. A Harvard graduate, he became known for activist investing and leading high-profile financial campaigns. Besides his stronghold in the finance sector, Ackman is an avid tennis enthusiast. He has financially supported rising stars like Frances Tiafoe, practices several times a week, and recently fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning a wildcard into a professional ATP Challenger doubles event.
Andy Roddick Slams Hall of Fame Open After Witnessing Ackman’s Match
After Ackman’s disappointing defeat in his wild card appearance alongside Jack Sock, Andy Roddick stepped forward to criticize the authorities for handing him the wild card despite minimal prior experience as a professional player.
“There was exactly one person on that court trying as hard as they could. If you want to argue with me, go back and watch that video. You can’t tell me there was more than one person trying as hard as they could every point, or any point. It was a disaster. This was beneath the Hall of Fame, in my opinion,” he said, in the Quick Served Podcast.
After the authority denied receiving the $10 million gift, it remains to be seen if the controversy will end.
