The speculation about Nick Saban’s potential return to coaching gained further momentum during SEC Media Days on July 14. As the legendary Alabama coach’s name dominates headlines, one of his former players, Caleb Downs, has shed light on the trait that defined Saban’s dynasty in Tuscaloosa: his consistency.
Now a star at Ohio State, Downs compared Saban’s approach with that of Buckeyes coach Ryan Day, offering a glimpse into what made Alabama a juggernaut and fueling intrigue about Saban’s next move.
Caleb Downs Praises Nick Saban’s Consistency That Boosted Alabama to the Top
Caleb Downs, the 2024 Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year and a Unanimous All-American, reflected on his freshman season under Saban at Alabama in a July 10, 2025, interview with RG.
“He was the most consistent person that I’ve ever met,” Downs said of Saban. “He was the same person every day, and that’s something that I acknowledged, and I learned from him.” This relentless consistency while approaching every practice, meeting, and game with the same intensity propelled Alabama to six national championships and nine SEC titles during Saban’s 17-year tenure.

Downs credited Saban’s disciplined mindset, noting that it instilled a standard where players aimed to “be the best” and execute “everything the right way” to maximize their potential.
Comparing Saban and Ryan Day
Now thriving under Ryan Day at Ohio State, where he won a national championship in 2024, Downs highlighted key differences between the two coaches. Day, who boasts a 70-10 record and led the Buckeyes to the 2024 title, puts a lot of focus on player empowerment.

“Just caring about your players and knowing them intimately… is something that I’ve learned from him,” Downs said, noting Day’s willingness to seek player input to foster growth. While Saban’s stoic, process-driven approach demanded precision.
Day’s collaborative style creates a “different philosophy” but maintains the same goal of dominating every play.
Downs emphasized that both programs share a championship standard, but “the means of how you do it is different.”
Saban’s Potential Return Rumors Rising
Saban’s retirement in January 2024, driven by frustrations with NIL and the transfer portal, shocked the sport. However, speculation about his return intensified at SEC Media Days, fueled by former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy.
“A very much in-the-know person… thinks Nick Saban is not done coaching,” McElroy said on the “Mac and Cube” show, though he personally believes Saban is content in retirement. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin predicted Saban’s return, possibly even to the NFL, while LSU’s Brian Kelly stated, “It’d be better for college football if Nick Saban is coaching.”
These sentiments all hint towards how much the Football world wants Saban to return.
