49ers WR With ‘Ability To Stretch the Field’ Predicted To Take Leap After Deebo Samuel’s Trade to Commanders

A second-year 49ers receiver could play a major role in reshaping the team’s offense following key offseason departures in San Francisco.

Ricky Pearsall’s rookie season with the San Francisco 49ers began with a life-threatening incident that nearly derailed his career before it started. Now, entering his second year, the young receiver finds himself positioned to become the franchise’s new focal point at the position. With multiple veteran receivers facing uncertain futures and a full offseason to prepare, Pearsall’s path to stardom has never been clearer.

Why Is Ricky Pearsall Being Predicted as the 49ers’ Next Breakout Star?

Pearsall’s rookie season began in a way no one could have predicted. Before the year even started, Pearsall was shot in the chest in an incident that nearly cost him his life, forcing him to miss the 49ers’ first six games of the 2024-25 season.

Once he recovered, he rejoined the team’s rotation but struggled to find his rhythm. Missing a full preseason made it harder to adjust to Kyle Shanahan’s complex offensive system. Additionally, Pearsall dealt with a hamstring strain that limited his ability to practice regularly.

Despite these early challenges, Pearsall showed flashes of potential when healthy. In a PFSN article, Brandon Austin named Pearsall the 49ers’ top breakout candidate for the 2025 season, citing Deebo Samuel’s departure as a major factor in his path to a starting role from Week 1.

“With Deebo Samuel gone, the San Francisco 49ers are turning to Ricky Pearsall to help fill the void in their receiving corps. Pearsall overcame early-season adversity, including injuries and a scary off-field incident, catching 31 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns on 46 targets,” Austin wrote.

What Factors Are Creating More Opportunities for Pearsall in 2025?

Beyond Samuel’s exit, two other factors indicate increased opportunities for Pearsall: Brandon Aiyuk’s injury and Jauan Jennings’ contract situation. It’s unlikely Aiyuk will be ready to start the 2025 season, and he may even open the year on the PUP list.

Meanwhile, Jennings has asked for a new contract or a trade after his most productive season in 2024. If he’s dealt, Pearsall could see an even bigger role, potentially becoming the offense’s No. 2 receiving option behind George Kittle.

This combination of circumstances creates a perfect storm for Pearsall’s emergence. With a full offseason under his belt and the team’s depth chart opening up, he’s positioned to step into a much larger role than anyone anticipated when the 49ers drafted him.

“Pearsall’s skill set differs from Samuel’s, but his production in limited opportunities and his ability to stretch the field make him an intriguing breakout candidate. With a larger role on tap and a proven work ethic, Pearsall is positioned to become a key weapon for Brock Purdy and the 49ers’ offense this season,” Austin added.

The 49ers head into 2025 with extra motivation, knowing Super Bowl LX will be played at Levi’s Stadium. After a disappointing year following their Super Bowl loss, San Francisco has embraced a mini reset. Another transition phase may be coming, and Pearsall could be a key piece in helping ease that next step.
