The New York Jets offered an extension to someone who they feel will have a tremendous impact for years to come. Find out the details of the deal.

The New York Jets just made a statement that echoes throughout the NFL. When you find a receiver who can handle chaos at quarterback, produce at an elite level, and still show up every Sunday, you pay him. That’s exactly what happened when Garrett Wilson signed the richest deal ever given to a wideout with just three seasons under his belt.

What Does Garrett Wilson’s Record-Breaking Extension Mean for the Jets?

While at Ohio State, Wilson functioned well within a talented group of wide receivers. Marvin Harrison Jr., Chris Olave, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba provided the offense with a room filled with lead receivers. When the Jets drafted him in 2022, many weren’t sure how he would step forward and become the main option.

From his rookie season, when he posted 1,103 yards and four touchdowns, those questions withered away. After winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year, the doubts dissipated. Now, the organization rewards its franchise wideout with a king-sized extension. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter fills in the blanks.

“ESPN sources: Jets and wide receiver Garrett Wilson reached agreement on a four-year, $130 million contract extension that includes $90 million guaranteed. It marks the first time in NFL history that a receiver has received an average over $31 million after playing only three.”

Why Did the Jets Commit This Much Money to Wilson?

Hearing your name called in the first round is difficult. However, securing a long-term, lucrative extension means that you’ve not only arrived but also that your team wants to keep you in place. What does this say about Wilson as a player? First, he withstood the uncertainty of the quarterback situation.

Justin Fields may not serve as a calming force, but he played with Wilson in Columbus, and they possess strong on-field chemistry. With his contract lasting for two seasons, the wideout knows that there will be a sense of normalcy around the facility under center.

Additionally, by committing the largest contract to a wideout with just three years of field time, the Jets showed they want to not only secure Wilson’s future but will actively seek to build around him. This sends a message to not only Wilson but also future Jets first-round picks that the franchise, if you play well, will take care of you.

Wilson traces great routes. Still, his number of drops (19) and yards per catch (11.6) show areas for improvement. At the same time, you cannot discount the perseverance of a player who never folded and dealt with drama from the quarterback position, choosing to just show up and play. Now, with Wilson extended, do they make other moves?
