Analyst Shuts Down ‘Easy Schedule’ Talk for Notre Dame, Warns Fighting Irish Face Brutal Gauntlet in 2025

On3's J.D. PicKell destroys Notre Dame's 'easy schedule' myth, warning that the Fighting Irish face a gauntlet of a schedule.

The days of Notre Dame coasting through an “easy schedule” are officially over.

On3’s J.D. PicKell delivered a reality check to college football fans, dismantling the long-standing narrative that the Fighting Irish have it soft when it comes to competition. His warning is clear: 2025 will test Notre Dame like never before.

Why Will Notre Dame’s New Quarterback Face Immediate Fire?

The real challenge for Notre Dame in 2025 goes beyond just tough opponents. It’s the brutal reality that their new starting quarterback will get zero warm-up games to find his rhythm. Whether CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey takes over after Riley Leonard, they’ll be thrown into the deep end from day one.

“This is anything but easy for Notre Dame in 2025,” PicKell said. “There’s no ramp-up process for Notre Dame. There’s no FCS West that you play to get the ball rolling.”

He continued, “Whoever your starting quarterback is, you better be ready from game one because you go play a team in Miami who is, I think, pissed off from how last year went. It’s not going to be any training wheels for either of those quarterbacks to get rolling.”

This quarterback situation adds another layer of difficulty to an already punishing schedule. Carr, a redshirt freshman, and Minchey, a sophomore with limited game experience, will face a gauntlet that would challenge even veteran signal-callers.

The season opener against Miami on August 31 sets the tone for everything that follows. The Hurricanes, now led by new quarterback Carson Beck, are hungry for redemption after missing the College Football Playoff despite their 10-3 record in 2024.

Beck’s arrival from Georgia gives Miami a significant upgrade and adds fuel to their motivation to prove they belong among college football’s elite.

What Makes Notre Dame’s 2025 Schedule So Dangerous?

After Miami, the challenges keep coming. Notre Dame hosts Texas A&M, travels to Arkansas for a tough road test, and welcomes College Football Playoff participant Boise State to South Bend. The schedule also features USC, Pittsburgh, and a murderer’s row of other opponents that will test the Irish week after week.

“The way it’s set up plus the opponents Notre Dame has to play, it’s anything but easy for Notre Dame in 2025,” PicKell noted. “When people say, ‘Ah, it’s an easy schedule.’ Really, have you looked at their schedule? Have you seen the way it sets up? Much less all the opponents they have to play.”

PicKell’s assessment cuts straight to the heart of the matter. “This is not your dad’s Notre Dame football schedule from 1990, whatever. Like, this is a real deal tough schedule, tough opponents, and I cannot wait for college football season to be here for us to get a better assessment of what Marcus Freeman’s squad is going to be here in 2025.”

For Marcus Freeman, entering his fourth season as head coach, the 2025 schedule represents the ultimate test of whether his program has built a championship-caliber foundation. The easy schedule narrative that has followed Notre Dame for years is about to be put to rest, one brutal game at a time.
