Analyst Warns Florida QB DJ Lagway’s Injury Could Linger, Despite Gators’ Hype-Fueled Heisman Expectations

DJ Lagway has emerged as a potential Heisman candidate, but this analyst has a few concerns as the quarterback enters his second season.

DJ Lagway’s hamstring injury from the 2024 season isn’t just a footnote in his stats. It’s the shadow hanging over Florida’s championship dreams and the Willis, Texas native’s Heisman hopes.

The 6’3″ 239-pound quarterback enters his second season with the Gators carrying both enormous expectations and lingering health questions that have one analyst urging caution.

Can Florida QB DJ Lagway Stay Healthy Enough to Reach His Elite Potential?

Florida sophomore QB DJ Lagway finished the 2024 season with a 59.9% completion percentage, throwing for 1,915 yards. He recorded 12 passing touchdowns to nine interceptions while adding 101 rushing yards.

The quarterback tallied 46 of those rushing yards in Florida’s 48-20 victory over Kentucky, reaching 16 or more yards in five of his games.

Florida insider Graham Hall sat down with analyst Bud Elliott on the “Cover 3” podcast to discuss the rising sophomore.

“I think that the guy has tremendous talent and is incredibly mature for his age,” Hall said.

“6-1 as a starter last season, with the lone loss being to Georgia when he exited in the second quarter with that Grade 2 Hamstring strain. You saw him have a lot of success down the stretch last season, and he wasn’t even able to use his full toolbox. The guy was still dealing with the injury.”

Despite the injury limitations, Lagway led the Gators to wins over No. 22 LSU and No. 9 Ole Miss after returning from the hamstring strain. He threw for 226 yards against LSU with one touchdown, then added two more touchdowns and just one interception while throwing for 180 yards in the 24-17 victory over Ole Miss.

What Areas Must Lagway Improve Beyond His Health Concerns?

Beyond the injury questions, Hall has identified specific areas where Lagway needs development. The analyst believes the quarterback needs to make better decisions more consistently, particularly when facing zone coverage.

Hall also noted that Lagway’s confidence sometimes crosses into overconfidence, which hurt the team during the 2024 season.

However, the health concerns remain the primary focus. Hall stays cautious about Lagway’s durability moving forward. The team kept quiet about why Lagway didn’t participate in camp, which Hall attributes to protective measures.

“I think that comes down to his family wishes and wanting to protect the quarterback. Any durability concerns could cause you to drop in the draft. Not saying we want to look that far ahead, but this is a desire to protect him,” Hall mentioned.

The situation becomes more complex when considering the long-term implications. “He did not have surgery. This is something he’s been dealing with throughout his career. He rested after the season, they thought it would get better, but come February, they shut him down so he’d be as healthy as possible for the 2025 season.”

Hall continued, “I would assume that if this is something that still bothers him after the season, they’d want to clean that up and make sure it’s not a long-term issue.”

Florida opens their season on August 30 when Long Island University visits Gainesville. The Gators will then host USF before traveling to Baton Rouge and Miami for crucial matchups.

The schedule intensifies as they prepare to host Arch Manning and Texas the following week, marking the beginning of what promises to be another challenging gauntlet for the program.
