Ex-NFL Scout Weighs In on Travis Kelce’s NFL Future Beyond 2025, Compares Chiefs Star’s Situation to Julian Edelman

Ex-NFL scout John Middlekauff explains why Travis Kelce won't play past 2025 and draws parallels to a Patriots legend's loyalty-driven exit.

The Travis Kelce retirement conversation just picked up some serious heat. This time, it’s coming from someone who used to make the calls behind the scenes, and his take might surprise Chiefs fans.

What Does an Ex-NFL Scout Think About Travis Kelce’s Future?

Former NFL scout John Middlekauff shared his thoughts on Kelce’s future during a recent episode of the “3 and Out” podcast. He didn’t hold back either. Middlekauff said it’s hard to imagine the tight end suiting up beyond 2025, especially not in a different uniform.

“Mahomes is going to outlive Kelce,” he said, referring to the quarterback-tight end duo that has defined this Chiefs era. According to Middlekauff, Kelce might’ve even considered walking away if Kansas City had won last year’s big game. Instead, he’s back for what looks like one last shot.

The comparison Middlekauff made was telling. He compared the situation to Julian Edelman’s time with New England, suggesting that Kelce, much like Edelman, wouldn’t stick around if it meant leaving the team he’s grown up with.

“This is his squad,” Middlekauff said. “There are no scholarships in football. I have a hard time, and I would never say never, but seeing Travis play for another team. And if you watch the way he talks, like I feel he thinks his connection it’s almost like a Julian Edelman type situation where it’s like ‘When I’m done, I’m done, but this is my squad right now.'”

The Chiefs have certainly relied on him for a long time. Kelce, now 35, just wrapped up a 97-catch, 823-yard season in 2024. He found the end zone three times and remains one of the most productive tight ends in the game. Still, age is undefeated, and Kansas City knows it.

Why Did Kelce Shut Down Trade Rumors So Quickly?

If Kelce leaves, it won’t be for another team. He made that clear during an appearance on the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast last month.

“At this point, no,” Kelce said when asked if he could see himself playing elsewhere. “Kansas City is like the only place I got a home. I’ve just had that sense of community, I think I would have a tough time putting on another jersey.”

The connection runs deeper than football. He opened up about his bond with the city itself, not just teammates but local people, the community, and even the restaurant staff. He also spoke about his deep relationships with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. He said Reid is like a second father while referring to Mahomes as “family.”

Kelce knows how the NFL works, though. He acknowledged that the team may eventually have to move on from him. But he’s not interested in keeping things open-ended or dragging out his career elsewhere.

After 12 seasons, 77 touchdowns, 10 Pro Bowls, three Super Bowl rings, and a place on the Hall of Fame’s All-2010s Team, no one’s questioning his exit plan. Whatever that looks like in 2025, it’ll be on his terms.
