The $3 million freshman quarterback from Detroit knows what’s coming. Bryce Underwood is getting ready for what he calls “a big change” as the Wolverines completely revamp their offensive approach.
After years of ground-and-pound football, Michigan is shifting toward a faster, more pass-heavy scheme. For Underwood, it’s a chance to lead a revolution.
How Will Michigan’s Faster Offense Transform Bryce Underwood’s Development?
Bryce Underwood, the top-ranked prospect in the 2025 class, is embracing the rapid changes unfolding within Michigan’s offense. The freshman quarterback confirmed that the Wolverines’ attack will be faster than in previous seasons, echoing what several teammates have already revealed.
“It definitely will,” Underwood said, agreeing with the assessment. “It’ll definitely be a big change. Honestly, us getting ready before the defenders can is one of our biggest things, of course, and beating you off the ball every single play.”
The Detroit native began acclimating to the college game during Michigan’s bowl practices last December. Since then, he’s completed winter conditioning and spring practices and continues to push forward during summer workouts.
“It’s going good,” he told TheWolverine.com. “Competing every single day with some of the best guys around the country has been a great opportunity for me. I’m getting more comfortable with everything, with the players, the coaches.”
Beyond the system changes, Underwood also expressed enthusiasm for offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell and quarterbacks coach Kirk Lindsey. When Lindsey was mentioned during an interview, Underwood lit up.
“Bryce Underwood, from practice one to practice 15 and what he brings to the table in terms of physical skills, is like nothing we’ve ever seen here before.”

“Great play caller and everything like that,” he said. “He just motivates me every day to be the best I can be.”
What Weapons Will Underwood Have at His Disposal?
Coaches have praised Underwood’s ability to process information and lead the huddle, areas in which he’s shown marked improvement. Despite the complexities of Michigan’s new system and the challenges of building timing with receivers, his natural talent and strong work ethic have set him apart.
Staff members and teammates consistently highlight his poise; some call him one of the most mentally advanced freshmen they’ve coached. The 6’4″ quarterback has no shortage of playmakers at his disposal.

Graduate receiver Donaven McCulley, a 6’5″ transfer from Indiana, and junior Fredrick Moore stood out during the spring.
“He’s a great playmaker,” Underwood said of McCulley. “Fred, same thing. He’s a little speedster. Donaven will go up top, and Fred will go up top, but just in a faster way.”

Meanwhile, running backs Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall form a duo that Underwood believes could be among the best nationally. He also praised the offensive line, which returns three starters.
“I feel like they’re building a lot of confidence, and we’re coming together as one,” he said.
Additionally, Underwood has made physical strides as well, gaining 15 pounds since his arrival.
“I came in at 215. I weigh 230 right now,” he said. The added size and speed, he believes, will elevate his performance heading into fall camp.
