‘It Would Crush Me’ — Matthew Tkachuk Reveals What Turn Of Events Would Leave Bad Taste In His Mouth In 2025-26

The Florida Panthers continue to revel in their second consecutive Stanley Cup championship in what was their third consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final, which have all taken place since the blockbuster 2022 offseason acquisition of Matthew Tkachuk from the Calgary Flames.

In what was one of the most consequential trades in recent NHL history, the Panthers stunned fans everywhere by trading Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar to the Flames for Tkachuk, made all the more astounding given that Huberdeau had just amassed a career-high 30 goals and 85 assists, helping the Panthers win the President’s Trophy as the top team in the NHL.

But the trade could not have worked out better for the Panthers, who have become the fourth team since the Detroit Red Wings (1997, 1998), Pittsburgh Penguins (2016, 2017), and Tampa Bay Lightning (2020, 2021) to win the Stanley Cup in consecutive seasons.

And you can bet that Tkachuk has his eyes set on even more championship parties in South Florida.

Matthew Tkachuk Heavily Motivated To Keep Championship Train Rolling For Panthers

There have been multiple notable players in NHL history who played their entire careers without even reaching the Stanley Cup Final, much less raising the famed trophy.

Matthew Tkachuk is not one of them, having now had his name engraved on the Stanley Cup twice. Despite the consecutive titles, you’d be mistaken if you think that he’s satisfied with not doing it again, especially given the caliber of team the Panthers have.

“People keep talking to me about ‘When you win one, you’re set right?’ I’m like no. They go ‘You win two, you’re set now, you do it back to back.’ It would crush me to have this good of a team that we have for the next however many years and waste opportunities. That’s the motivation now,” he said.

The Panthers have all the pieces in place to continue their dominance in the NHL, having not only re-signed Conn Smythe Trophy winner Sam Bennett to an eight-year contract extension but also locked up 2025 NHL Trade Deadline acquisition Brad Marchand to a six-year contract extension.

Florida also managed to extend top defenseman Aaron Ekblad to an eight-year contract extension of his own, meaning that the Panthers have all of their core players signed through at least 2030.

The Stanley Cup belongs to the Panthers until someone takes it from them, and they’re going to do everything possible to make sure that doesn’t happen any time soon.
