Amanda Anisimova Expresses Surprise Over Her Commendable Win Against Aryna Sabalenka

Amanda Anisimova reached her first-ever Grand Slam final after a hard-fought win against World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Wimbledon semi-finals on Thursday.

The match lasted over two and a half hours, with Anisimova showing signs of nervousness in the last set. However, despite the odds, she defeated the Belarusian player in three sets: 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

After the win, Anisimova openly admitted she was surprised to find herself in the final of the grass court major.

Marking her return to Wimbledon main draw after three long years, the WTA star admitted to the fact that she finds it hard to believe the current outcome.

“To be honest if you told me I’d be in the final of Wimbledon I would not believe you. At least not this soon because its been a year turnaround since coming back and to be in this spot, its not easy. So many people dream of competing on this incredible court. To be in the final is indescribable,” the 23-year-old said.

Having secured a spot in the final, Anisimova will now face either Iga Świątek, who thrashed Belinda Bencic 6-2, 6-0.

Besides expressing excitement about her commendable win against Sabalenka, Anisimova also mentioned how the World No.1 made it seem difficult for her to make way through the high-stakes match.

“This doesn’t feel real right now. Aryna is such a tough competitor. I was absolutely dying out there. I don’t know how I pulled it out. She’s an inspiration to me and so many other people. We’ve had so many tough battles,” she said.

Finding light amid the Sabalenka-heavy crowd, she also gave a shoutout to the fans who cheered for her despite being the underdog.

“To come on top today and be in the Wimbledon final is so incredibly special. The atmosphere was incredible. I know she’s #1. But a lot of people were cheering for me. I just wanna say a huge thank you to everyone,” the 23-year-old added.

The recent win marked Anisimova’s sixth victory against Sabalenka, giving her a dominant 6-3 edge in the head-to-head between the two.
