‘Very Disappointing’ — WNBA Fans React to Caitlin Clark’s Lackluster Game During Fever’s 80-61 Loss vs. Valkyries

Caitlin Clark’s return to the Indiana Fever ended in a tough loss to the Golden State Valkyries as the team struggled offensively.

Caitlin Clark walked back onto the court after five games on the sideline, and Indiana Fever fans held their breath. This was supposed to be the moment their star guard shook off the rust and reminded everyone why she’s the face of the franchise. Instead, Clark managed just 10 points in a brutal 61-80 loss to the Golden State Valkyries, leaving fans wondering if the injuries are taking a bigger toll than anyone wants to admit.

Why Did Caitlin Clark’s Return Fall So Flat Against Golden State?

The numbers tell the story of a player still finding her way back. After missing five games with a groin injury, Clark returned on July 9 but couldn’t find her rhythm against the Valkyries. She shot just four of 12 from the field in 25 minutes, adding six assists, five rebounds, and four turnovers to her stat line.

This wasn’t Clark’s first injury absence of the 2024-25 campaign. She missed five games in May with a quad strain before returning in mid-June with a strong 32-point performance against the New York Liberty. However, on June 26, she was ruled out again with the groin injury that kept her sidelined for the Fever’s next five games, including their Commissioner’s Cup Championship win over the Minnesota Lynx.

The Valkyries’ defense deserves credit for making Clark uncomfortable. Golden State has learned how to contain her rhythm, using relentless ball pressure to keep her off balance. This marked the second time this season their defense held her to just 10 points. With this win, Golden State now owns the second-best defensive rating in the league (97.3) and leads all teams by holding opponents to just 39.4% shooting.

Clark’s 42% shooting combined with the team’s overall 31% shooting reflected one of the Fever’s roughest offensive outings of the season. The 61 points also marked their second-lowest scoring game so far.

How Are Fans Reacting to Clark’s Struggles?

The reaction was swift and harsh. Fans took to social media to express their frustration with Clark’s performance. One wrote, “Absolute worst stretch of her basketball career,” while another called it a “very disappointing afternoon.”

Head coach Stephanie White tried to ease the pressure on Clark by playing her more off the ball and pairing her with Aari McDonald. Though Clark led the team in assists, the tactical change didn’t lead to offensive success for Indiana.

After the loss, Clark took responsibility for the team’s poor showing. She said, “Nobody played well today… Look at yourself in the mirror. Find ways where you can get better and come back to practice tomorrow and play again on Friday.”

The injury concerns are becoming harder to ignore. During the 2023-24 season, Clark didn’t miss a single game due to injury. But this season, she has already missed 10 games. The Fever now sit at 9-10 and will try to bounce back in their next game against the Atlanta Dream.

While this may be just a temporary dip as Clark works her way back from injury, the growing number of missed games is alarming for her sophomore campaign. The Valkyries, now 10-9, showed that teams are learning how to exploit any weakness in Clark’s game, especially when she’s not at full strength.
