NFL Analyst Explains Why Chiefs Would ‘Like To’ Relocate to Kansas Amid Uncertainty Over Future in Missouri

An NFL Insider discloses what he believes the ultimate mindset of the Chiefs is when it comes to their future playing at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Kansas City Chiefs face a crossroads that could reshape their identity forever. After calling Arrowhead Stadium home since 1972, the franchise must decide whether to renovate their legendary venue or abandon Missouri entirely for a shiny new domed stadium across state lines in Kansas. With their lease expiring in 2031, the clock is ticking on one of the most significant decisions in franchise history.

The Chiefs share the Truman Sports Complex with Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. While the team weighs their options between renovation and relocation, one prominent NFL insider believes he knows which direction the organization truly wants to go.

Why Does Mike Florio Think the Chiefs Want To Leave Missouri?

NBC Sports insider Mike Florio, who writes for ProFootballTalk.com, recently shared his gut feeling about the Chiefs’ true intentions. Despite the public back-and-forth between Missouri and Kansas, Florio believes the Chiefs would like to move across state lines to Kansas rather than stay put at Arrowhead Stadium.

“I think that for now, they’re just going to try and get the best possible deal,” Florio explained. “Keep leveraging Missouri against Kansas, Kansas against Missouri. But deep down, I think they’d like to go to Kansas.”

The financial calculations play a major role in this decision. Florio pointed out the stark difference in costs between the two options, noting that renovating Arrowhead would be significantly cheaper than building from scratch.

“If they can come up with whatever their contribution is going to be, which means maximizing the public contribution and paying as little as possible, because they’d pay a lot less for a renovation of Arrowhead, they’re going to pay more for a new stadium.”

What Makes a Domed Stadium More Attractive Than Arrowhead?

The appeal of a domed venue extends far beyond just football games. Kansas City’s harsh winter climate severely limits what events can take place at the outdoor Arrowhead Stadium during the colder months. This weather restriction essentially shuts down the venue for non-football activities when temperatures drop.

A domed stadium would eliminate this seasonal limitation entirely. As Florio explained, the year-round event capability represents a significant revenue opportunity that Arrowhead simply cannot match in its current form.

“But it may be better in the long run, and they make more money in the long run, because the domed stadium can have events all year long,” Florio said.

This revenue potential from concerts, conventions, and other events throughout the winter months could help justify the higher upfront construction costs of a new facility.

How Much Time Do the Chiefs Have To Decide?

Kansas originally set a deadline of late June 2025 for the Chiefs to make their official choice between renovating their current home or building new across state lines. However, the Chiefs requested and received an extension on this crucial decision.

The new deadline is now June 30, 2026, providing the organization with another full year to weigh their options and negotiate with both states.

Meanwhile, Arrowhead Stadium continues to age. While the venue maintains its reputation as one of the premier environments in the National Football League and across professional sports in North America, it lacks many modern amenities that newer stadiums offer.

The inability to host year-round events remains perhaps the most significant limitation compared to what a new domed facility could provide.

Please move. Tired of the drama. Not paying for a stadium. Build your own. How about building me a house?
