49ers GM John Lynch Provides Major Update on Brock Purdy Contract Talks Ahead of Important Offseason

After three straight NFC Championship appearances, each coming after a double-digit win season, the San Francisco 49ers looked like one of the NFL‘s most dominant forces. Their Super Bowl 58 run established their place among the league’s elite teams, but the 2024 season was different.

Instead of another deep playoff run, the 49ers crashed to a 6-11 record, looking like a shell of their former selves. Injuries, inconsistent play, and a struggling defense derailed what was once a powerhouse. Now, heading into a crucial offseason, the franchise has a major decision: what to do about quarterback Brock Purdy’s contract.

49ers GM John Lynch Confirms Contract Talks With Brock Purdy

Purdy, the former Mr. Irrelevant turned franchise quarterback, has been the centerpiece of San Francisco’s offense since taking over in 2022. With his rookie contract ending soon, the 49ers have started discussions with Purdy and his agents about a new deal. GM John Lynch recently provided a key update on the situation.

“We have started negotiations, we’re talking,” Lynch said. “I won’t go into negotiations, like always is our stance. I want Brock to be our quarterback as long as we’re here and beyond, and we’ll leave it at that.”

That statement makes one thing clear: the 49ers see Purdy as their long-term answer. But what kind of deal will he land, and will it be the right move? That remains to be seen unlike his past production which we’ll talk about next.

Purdy’s Production and the Question of His Next Deal

Since taking over as the 49ers’ starter, Purdy has put up solid numbers. So far in his NFL career, he has thrown for over 8,500 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions while completing 67.5% of his passes in 40 games (36 as the starting QB). He finished last season ranked as the 7th-best quarterback in the NFL according to PFSN’s QB+ metric, earning a B+ rating of 87.6.

There’s no denying that Purdy has outperformed expectations for a former seventh-round pick. But now, the challenge for San Fran is deciding how much he’s worth moving forward.

The Financial Debate: How Much Is Too Much?

Purdy is still on his rookie deal, earning an absolute bargain for a starting quarterback. However, with contract negotiations now underway, he’s expected to land a significant raise.

Some analysts believe a new deal for Purdy could approach or even exceed $30 million annually. But not everyone is convinced that’s a wise investment. Mike Florio and Chris Simms have both argued that paying Purdy top-tier quarterback money would be a mistake, when in their eyes, he’s not even in the top half of starters currently in the NFL.

The 49ers find themselves in a tough spot. Locking up Purdy ensures continuity at quarterback, but it also puts pressure on the front office to manage the cap wisely. There is still some doubt on whether he is truly the one who will lead this team to a championship. With key roster decisions looming, how the 49ers handle Purdy’s contract could shape the team’s future for years to come.
