Two minors have been charged in connection with a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs‘ Wednesday Super Bowl parade that left one dead and more than 20 injured.
According to a news release from the 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri Jackson County Family Court, two juveniles were charged on Thursday. They are being held in Jackson County’s Juvenile Detention Center on “gun-related and resisting arrest charges.”
Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
Police said the deadly shooting was not a targeted attack. Instead, the violence stemmed from a disagreement between several people at the Super Bowl rally.
Three suspects were initially detained, but only two remain in custody as of Friday.
Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a 43-year-old DJ and radio host, was killed in the shooting. A GoFundMe account that will assist Lopez-Galvan’s family can be found here.
Twenty-three people, including Lopez-Galvan, were shot during on Wednesday. Police said the victims ranged in age from eight to 47, while at least half were under 16 years old.
No Chiefs staff, coaches, or players were injured during the shooting.
In a Wednesday statement, the Chiefs organization said it is “truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City.”
Over 800 police officers were deployed in the area for the Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade. Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas, present at the rally, said Wednesday’s attack will not prevent further celebrations.
“We have parades all the time,” Lucas said. “I don’t think they’ll end. Certainly, we recognized the public safety challenges and issues that relate to them.”
