Before the trade deadline, the Dallas Mavericks sent Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards. The move signals that Washington may become more competitive in the near future, as two of the league’s biggest stars are now playing for the franchise.
Earlier this year, the Wizards acquired Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks in an effort to strengthen the roster for next season. Securing Davis from Dallas underscores the team’s commitment to acquiring top talent. With two All-Star-caliber players now on the roster, Wizards general manager Will Dawkins outlined his expectations for the duo.

Wizards GM Excited to See Anthony Davis and Trae Young Play Together
In a recent interview with Wizards beat writers, Dawkins discussed the pairing of Davis and Young. While it may take time before the two share the court, Dawkins expressed optimism about the team’s direction.
“Trae probably has never played with a player to the level of Anthony Davis, while also leading the league in assists and assists percentage for how many years now,” Dawkins said. “You add a player like (Davis), they can play a two-man game. That opens it up.”
Dawkins also addressed how Davis would complement other teammates, including Alex Sarr. He emphasized Davis’ impact on both ends of the floor.
“AD is a special player, special talent,” Dawkins said. “He obviously opens up so much on offense because he demands double teams. He can score in different areas. Defensively, he’s been an anchor, rebounder, and rim protector. You have him at the four, Alex at the five protecting the paint. … We want to be long. We want to be athletic. … I think adding someone like him opens up the game of a lot of our other players but also allows him to be Anthony Davis.”

Davis will not play until next season. According to multiple reports, he has been ruled out for the remainder of the current campaign and will focus on recovery.
The Wizards want Davis in peak condition when the 2026-27 season begins to maximize their chances of competing in the Eastern Conference.
Meanwhile, Young is expected to return from injury after the All-Star break, giving Washington fans an early look at what the future may hold.
