Wizards Predicted To Select 16.5-PPG Wildcard With No. 6 Pick in 2025 NBA Draft

The Washington Wizards are projected to draft a 16.5 PPG wildcard at No. 6 in the 2025 NBA Draft, sparking buzz over his potential and team fit.

We’re just 13 days away from the 2025 NBA Draft, and the anticipation is building around where this year’s rookie class will land. Like it or not, most of the hype is centered on the top 10 picks—and surprisingly, Maryland freshman Derik Queen has seen a significant improvement in his draft stock.

Just last month, he was heavily linked to the No. 11 pick, expected to go to the Portland Trail Blazers. But now, a recent mock draft projects him to go to the Washington Wizards at No. 6 overall. With multiple mock drafts connecting Queen to both Washington and the Trail Blazers, his unique skill set could significantly shape how the lottery unfolds.

Derik Queen Could Be Wizards’ Surprise Pick at No. 6 in NBA Draft

On May 12, the Wizards learned that they had secured the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. They entered the lottery with the second-best odds after finishing the regular season with an 18–64 record. The expectation was landing a top-three pick, but unfortunately, the results dropped them to the lowest possible spot.

Now, with the No. 6 pick, the Wizards are reportedly eyeing the Maryland freshman. Interestingly, Queen, who averaged 16.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game on 52.6% shooting, is considered one of the most debated prospects in this year’s class.

Queen stands 6-foot-10 and weighs 247 pounds. But don’t let his size fool you—his game is all about skill, not brute strength. He moves with smooth footwork, finishes with a soft touch, and sees the court like a guard. His passing, especially in tight spots, has impressed many scouts over time. Whether it’s a quick skip pass or a crafty finish near the rim, Queen makes it look easy. That’s why many experts see him as one of the most polished big men in this year’s draft.

ESPN analyst Paul Biancardi recently praised him as “a tremendous competitor” with “versatility on offense.” But not everyone is sold just yet. His draft stock still swings from team to team. As The Ringer’s J. Kyle Mann noted, “He’s not going to be your defensive anchor… He might shoot it? He might reach peak physical condition and stay there?”

But the concern is surrounding his defensive effort. His defensive mobility and inconsistent motor have made him a wildcard. His success may ultimately depend on landing with the right team in the right system.

Maybe that’s why PFSN mock draft expert Brandon Austin projected Queen to go No. 11 to the Trail Blazers. He cited Queen’s potential to solidify a rising frontcourt alongside Deni Avdija, Toumani Camara, and Donovan Clingan. Austin also praised his “touch, timing, and feel,” and highlighted his passing as “one of the most advanced” among bigs in the class.

Whether Queen ends up in D.C. or Portland, one thing is clear: he’s a high-risk, high-reward prospect. So, it will be fun to see where he finally lands.
