Indiana Pacers’ Obi Toppin has been an instrumental force in a successful season so far for the Indiana Pacers. He has delivered high-energy performances, elevated his game and showcased his athleticism every night. As the Pacers now aim for their first championship, his contributions on the court are pivotal. Be it his explosive dunks or his defensive versatility, Obi is a fan favorite and an integral part of Indiana.Â
Beyond his on-court achievements, Obi’s basketball journey is deeply embedded in his family’s rich athletic background. In fact, his younger brother, Jacob Toppin, is also making strides in the league, on a different team.
Meet Jacob Toppin, Obi Toppin’s Brother
Obi and Jacob both hail from Brooklyn, New York, where they spent the majority of their lives. The younger Jacob followed in his brother’s footsteps, carving out his own league in the basketball world.
He played one season at the University of Rhode Island before transferring to University of Kentucky for two more years. There, he really developed into a versatile forward. During his senior year at Kentucky, Jacob averaged 12.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists each game. He was showing signs of early brilliance and all-around athleticism.
After going undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft, Jacob signed a two-way contract with the New York Knicks, the same place where Obi started his NBA career. Although his time with the Knicks was brief, Jacob continued to pursue his dreams.
In March 2025, he signed a two-way contract with the Atlanta Hawks, solidifying his place in the league.
The Toppin Family Legacy
Both brothers were born in a family where basketball runs deep in their family DNA. Their father, Obadiah Toppin Sr, was a renowned street ball player in Brooklyn, who was known by his nickname, ‘Dunker’s Delight’. He’s even played professionally for the Harlem Strong Dogs, and played professionally overseas in the Dominican Republic.
Growing up in a basketball-centric household, both Obi and Jacob were inspired by their father’s passion and dedication to the game. In fact, their mother, Roni, also played a significant role in their lives, developing their passion and offering her unconditional support for their journeys.
Obi and Jacob’s bond extends beyond the court. In a memorable moment during the 2023 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, Jacob leaped over Obi in one of his spectacular dunk attempts.
The moment generated quite a buzz for sibling rivalry, but for the two, it was celebrating their shared love for basketball and each other.
As Obi continues shining in the NBA Finals, his family’s influence will remain a strong pillar in his life. The Toppin brothers’ journey is a reflection of their hard work, resilience, and a testament to their talent, hard work and unbreakable bond.
