Who Is Scott Perry? All About the Sacramento Kings’ New GM After Firing Monte McNair

Everything you need to know about Scott Perry, the Sacramento Kings new, yet familiar, general manger, after the team fired Monte McNair.

The Sacramento Kings moved quickly after firing general manager Monte McNair, hiring Scott Perry as their new GM, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Who Is Scott Perry?

Perry returns to the Kings after spending three months in Sacramento in 2017, where he was the vice president of basketball operations. The longtime NBA executive has experience with Kings owner Vivek Ranadive and then-GM Vlade Divac. Perry left the team to become the GM of the New York Knicks and was briefly the Knicks’ interim president in 2020 after the team fired Steve Mills.

“The Sacramento Kings are finalizing a deal to hire longtime NBA executive Scott Perry as their new general manager, sources tell ESPN. Perry spent three months with the Kings in 2017 before leaving for the Knicks. Perry started his exec career in 2000 with Detroit.”

The new Kings’ GM started his career as an executive with the Detroit Pistons in 2000. A Michigan native, Perry won an NBA championship with the team in 2004. He also spent time with the Seattle SuperSonics and Orlando Magic and worked as an ESPN analyst before his return to California.

Why Scott Perry Is Replacing Monte McNair

Sacramento parted ways with McNair, the NBA’s Executive of the Year in 2023, after a five-year stint that saw the Kings break a 16-season playoff drought. The Kings finished 40-42 in 2024-25, ninth in the Western Conference, and were eliminated in the 9/10 play-in game with a 120-106 loss at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks.

The Kings are hoping that the return of Perry will re-light the beam with a talented roster that includes Zach Lavine, Domantas Sabonis, and Malik Monk after trading De’Aaron Fox during the season.
