The Golden State Warriors needed each and every single one of Stephen Curry’s 28 points to hold on and beat the Phoenix Suns 118-107 at home. It was a much-needed bounce-back win after consecutive losses against the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers to get their record to 5-3.
Unfortunately, things won’t get much easier on Wednesday night, as Curry is dealing with a lingering health issue, raising questions about his availability vs. the Sacramento Kings.
Stephen Curry Admits He’s Dealing With an Illness
According to ESPN insider Anthony Slater, the four-time NBA champion will try to play through the condition, but he also admitted that he wasn’t feeling very well down the stretch: “Tonight, the second half, the gas tank was on E. I’m not blaming the airball on that,” Curry said.
“Just trying to dig through it and get to the finish line and get a win and keep moving.”
Steph Curry said his “gas tank was on E” in the second half due to his cold. He said he was going to see the team doctors before officially deciding whether to travel/play vs Kings tomorrow night, but sounds unlikely. pic.twitter.com/1ADxuyeMeR

Curry finished the game with 28 points, adding four rebounds, three assists, five three-pointers, one steal, and one block on a night they also lost Jimmy Butler after 14 minutes with an injured back.
The Warriors are banged up, and coach Steve Kerr doesn’t want to take any chances. That’s why, regardless of what the doctors say about Curry’s condition, he’s already ruled him out of the game against the Kings:
“He’s wiped out right now, so I don’t care what the doctors say, we gotta get him some rest,” Kerr said. “I’ll make the decision right now — he’s not going to play tomorrow. He needs to rest. He’s been sick, and all the travel has just caught up to him.”
Sometimes, it’s up to coaches to protect players from themselves. Curry is a pro’s pro, and he’s always going to give it a shot, even in the load management era. Then again, the NBA season is a marathon and a long grind, and the Warriors need to look at the big picture here.
Curry will get a couple of additional days to rest before the Warriors face the Denver Nuggets on Friday, and things won’t be easy for him in Denver’s altitude if he’s gasping for air. The Warriors have a veteran roster with seasoned veterans like Curry, Butler, Draymond Green, and Al Horford all playing heavy minutes.
After a turbulent start to the season, Coach Kerr will be trying to make sure they’re all healthy and ready to roll in April, not in early November.
