Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. Makes Feelings Known on Draymond Green’s Potential Exit From Golden State

Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. addresses Draymond Green’s future and what's the best outcome for both parties are.

For 14 seasons, Draymond Green has anchored the Golden State Warriors’ defense. Green played a major role in building one of the most successful dynasties in modern basketball. Alongside teammates like Stephen Curry, he helped the Warriors win four NBA championships and become one of the most recognizable teams in the league. But the 2025–26 season has been far from smooth for the veteran forward.

Warriors GM Shares His Thoughts on the Possibility of Draymond Green Leaving the Warriors

Green’s usual energy and production have dipped significantly this season, and the Warriors have struggled to stay competitive in a difficult Western Conference.

For a player who built his reputation on relentless defense and leadership, the decline has raised questions about what comes next for both Green and the franchise.

Stats show that this season has been unusually challenging for the former Defensive Player of the Year. Green is shooting just 40.6% from the field, his lowest mark in six years. His assist-to-turnover ratio of around 1.9 is also the worst he has posted in more than a decade. These numbers have stoked speculation about his future with the team.

For the first time in years, trade rumors have started to circulate around Green’s name. The Warriors’ general manager recently addressed those discussions, making it clear that the organization still values the veteran star. Speaking about the possibility of Green leaving the team, Dunleavy admitted that it is difficult for him to even imagine such a scenario.

Per @CurryForGame: “It’s hard to picture this team without Steph, without Draymond, without Steve. So I don’t really picture those things,” Dunleavy said. “But to the point about Steph being back this year, if we’re talking in absolutes, it’s impossible for me to guarantee anything.

But we want Draymond here. We want him to finish his career here just like we do Steph. So I don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be back. I mean, we’ve got to finish this season. I’m much more focused on these last 20 games than I am on what we’re doing this summer.”

Despite that reassurance, the situation still carries some uncertainty. Green holds a $27.7 million player option for next season. If he chooses to opt in, he would likely remain on the Warriors roster. However, it could also give the franchise flexibility to explore trade options depending on how the team plans to reshape its lineup.

Previous reports from ESPN also revealed that the Warriors had already engaged in preliminary trade discussions involving Green ahead of the February NBA trade deadline. While no deal materialized, the conversations signaled that the team is at least considering different long-term scenarios.

Golden State’s struggles this year have also been compounded by injuries. A devastating injury to Jimmy Butler III and a flare-up of Stephen Curry’s runner’s knee have further shifted expectations across the NBA landscape.

For many Warriors fans, those setbacks made it easier to accept that this season might not unfold the way they had hoped. The Warriors are eighth in the West with a 31-30 record. They have lost six of their last 10 games.
