Warriors’ Depth Chart: Updated Starting Lineup After Jimmy Butler III’s Scary Injury

Jimmy Butler III suffers a concerning right knee injury against the Heat. Warriors have to reassess their depth chart and starting lineup.

Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler III suffered a frightening right knee injury during Monday (Jan. 19) night’s game against the Miami Heat. It cast uncertainty over the team’s rotation as it enters a critical stretch of the season. Here’s what the Warriors’ lineup could look like in the coming games.

Warriors Have To Adjust Rotation After Jimmy Butler III’s Injury

The Warriors hosted the Heat at Chase Center on Monday, Jan. 19, with a 24-19 record. Miami came in at 22-20. The Warriors won the game 135-112.

Midway through the third quarter, with Golden State leading 77-75, Butler went down in visible pain following a drive to the basket.

Butler received a pass and attempted to rise for a shot when Heat guard Davion Mitchell bumped him. Butler landed awkwardly and immediately fell to the floor, clutching his right knee and screaming in pain near the baseline.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr quickly called a timeout as medical staff rushed to Butler’s side.

Butler was unable to put weight on his right leg and needed assistance to leave the floor. He was helped to the locker room by teammates Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga. Golden State later ruled Butler out for the remainder of the game.

Anthony Slater of The Athletic posted an update on X during the game, writing, “Jimmy Butler can’t put weight on his right knee. Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga helping him to the locker room after a concerning scene in Chase Center.”

The Warriors did not immediately provide details on the severity of the injury. There is no official diagnosis or timetable for Butler’s return; however, the visual evidence raised concern within the organization and among fans.

Before exiting, Butler had logged 17 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals in 21 minutes.

Updated Warriors Depth Chart After Butler’s Injury

Monday marked Butler’s return after he missed the Warriors’ 136-116 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday due to personal reasons.

We just got a preview of what a Butler-less Warriors squad looks like on Saturday, and Golden State defeated Charlotte 136-116 with Richard contributing 11 points on 5-12 shooting from the field, five assists, six rebounds, three steals, and one block with just one turnover. He was a team-high +24. Given how well Richard played when his number was called, one would imagine that Steve Kerr goes back to him.

Golden State’s depth and flexibility will be tested as it attempts to stay afloat in the Western Conference playoff race.

  • PG: Stephen Curry | Brandin Podziemski | Pat Spencer
  • SG: Moses Moody | Gary Payton II | Pat Spencer
  • SF: Will Richard | De’Anthony Melton | Buddy Hield | Jimmy Butler III (out)
  • PF: Draymond Green | Al Horford | Jonathan Kuminga
  • C: Quinten Post | Al Horford | Trayce Jackson-Davis

The Warriors currently sit eighth in the league standings and are navigating a tight playoff picture. Losing Butler for an extended period would place additional scoring and defensive responsibility on Curry, Green, and the supporting cast.

Golden State will not have much time to regroup. The Warriors are scheduled to return to action Tuesday, Jan. 20, as they continue a demanding stretch of games. With postseason positioning on the line, Butler’s health and the team’s ability to adapt without him could prove decisive in the weeks ahead.
